Endura vs. CRKT M21-04

Which of these two knives would make a better SD/Utility knife? They are both the same price.

The M21....it's MUCH faster to deploy and has a finger guard. I also love the blade shape on the M21...

The Endura is a nice knife too, but I find it's best suited for work, not defense....it's slow. The superior steel is nice, but I also don't see that being an issue in a fight.

I have the M21-04; and have to tell you that it is big! Tactical design; and the Carson Flipper is a nice feature. Most versions come so that you can adjust the clip for left/right and tip up/down carry, I wear mine tip up w/the blade spine against the seam of my pocket.

As far as a SD knife, I can't say I'd necessarily rank it too highly. The clip is pretty tight initially (maybe if I wore it more it would change), plus the 5" handle is so long it seems to take forever to pull out and then flip open. To use the Carson flipper, you have to flick the blade open with a wrist snap - in a real SD situation it's wasted motion. I am planning to use mine as a camp knife as the wide blade seems perfect for it.

A better SD knife IMO would be a smaller folder like the smaller CRKT M21-12, a CRKT M16, a balisong, or a small fixed blade (like the now-discontinued Spyderco Ronin, the Becker Necker, an Emerson Kerambit, etc).

The Endura, being smaller, would be easier to deploy. The 4th Generation version of the blade comes in tip-up carry; which is a plus for SD applications. I don't own an Endura, but having handled the M21 and if SD is your #1 intention for the blade I can say I'd either go for the Endura of the 2 you picked, or the M21-02 over the -04.

CRKT M16-14SF is a very nifty knife that will do it all.
I have it & an Endura & they are totally different toys.
The Spydie is a workhorse, the M16 is a fistful of fun!

I'd go with the CRKT personally, it just feels like a nicer knife IMO. But I tend to think anything with FRN feels cheap. I don't really know why, I have and love a few different FRN Spyderco's, but I just don't like the plasticy feel.

Really you can't go wrong with either though.

I refuse to use a knife that requires a secondary lock to be safe.

Other than that, the CRKT is a more substantial knife, but you don't need to worry about the Endura not being up to the task. Superior steel in the Endura. I wouldn't call the Endura slow either, since a flick of the wrist (holding it either normally or reverse) will open the blade with ease.

Have there been any problems with using rivets to hold the Endura together? I mean, are screws better than rivets or not?

Rivets or threaded fasteners (screws).

When properly designed and manufactured, they are both adequately strong for a knife.

I've never heard of the rivets on a "quality" knife failing under less than (super) extreme use. Usually something else fails first.

The screw method of assembly has the advantage of being able to readily disassemble/adjust the knife.

Anything Spyderco is better than anything CRKT. Just higher quality. I like some of the CRKT designs (they were the only company to ever do a team-up with Peter Marzitelli), but Spydercos are just better-made. Better steel, better ergos, etc. Just my .02.
