Endura vs SAK as a can opener

The other day, I pulled the tab off a can without it opening the can. I was standing in the dark and realized I didn't have my SAK on me. I set the can on the ground and pulled out my 15-year-old Endura and carefully pushed the tip into the lid and began to turn the can. It went along so easily, I thought the tip must have pulled out from the lid. It was dark and I was going mainly by feel. Anyway, I reached down and lifted the lid and off it came! The Endura opened that can about 5 times faster and easier than my SAK can opener does the job. I checked to see if I damaged the tip and there was not even a scratch on the polished AUS8 blade. I decided that, with care being taken, the Endura is a much better can opener than the SAK. My knife has a hollow ground and polished blade and molded clip.

1. Cans with tabs are aluminum, which is softer than steel.
2. Cans with tabs are pre-cut so they are easily opened.
3. Try this with a non-pull tab can and re-assess.
4. SAK can opener all the way.

Yes, this was a can of cat food. I suppose the SAK would be better on tougher stuff. However, I had a pack of hungry cats eying me and the Endura saved the day, lol! So, I suppose we can say the Endura is better on aluminum cans.

With my worst cut/scrape having come from a jagged can lid from cat food I'd have to go with the safer SAK for that purpose as it was designed for it rather than carefully making do with the endura. I've found that even being a careful person by nature there will be some accidents in your life if you live long enough. I strive to eliminate the ones I can and for sure I wouldn't be opening cans with a knife unless it was designed for, and had the correct tool for the job.

I do always keep an endura on me as it's a better knife IMO. I just also have a P38 on me for opening cans and have since I got my first one with a box of C rations in boot camp. Marvelous thing, those P38's. I bought in bulk long ago, gave away many and still have plenty. It was a good investment.

I'll have to get a P38. I forgot about them. That Endura blade is a bit long and dangerous for opening cans in the dark, lol! I kept thinking, am I going to lose a finger here?
