Ok,

I once saw one of these on Ebay and thought to myself "wow, this is a neat little knife."

and now I see no less than 10 on ebay on any given day, which is starting to make me doubt people who say this knife is "rare"

How many of this knife were produced? Were there any plain edged versions?

Just curious..

Tom - Apparently this is an aftermarket modification. Spyderco did not produce these so I have no idea how many were actually produced.

Sal,

That is indeed interesting... I've seen so many of them, I only assumed they had to have been an organized distribution. I've also seen Rescue models in that style. Guess I won't pick one up

for those of you wondering what I'm talking about:

I thought that was a modification made by Smokey Mountain Knife Works. I'm probably wrong. The old thread might be in the Spydie Archives. Someone has to know.

I'm not sure about this model, but i have been doing this for years with my Endura's. Just take a paint pen (from a modle store) and paint in the lines. It lasts forever because it never receives direct abbrasion. i always did it to mark my knife from those others i new freinds and co-workers had. Never saw one from the box like that though.

We had a thread on this in the 1st Spyderco forums archives. As far as I could find out,the knives were sent to a custom shop for the work by Blue Ridge Knives (a knife distributor)and then sold through them. They did this due to the fact that when Spyderco changed the design of the Rescue and Endura to incorporate steel clips, they were stuck with a large inventory of the old models. They are still available through Blue Ridge (dealers only) and are actually pretty nicely done.
