For those of you who drink them, what are your opinions of the multitude of energy drinks out there?

Red Bull: Probably the best tasting. Reminds me a lot of when I used to pour pixie sticks in my Sprite. I rarely drink it though, because it costs so damn much ($2 a can).

Mt. Dew Amp: Tastes pretty good as well. Again, too expensive to drink regularly.

Rock Star: About twice the size of a Red Bull for the same price. Don't really care for the taste though, it's rather bitter.

Sobe: Slightly more exensive than the other 16oz size ones ($2.39). Great if you like the taste of antifreeze. :barf:

Hanson: Awful stuff.

Monster: The only one I buy with any regularity. At first I could barely stand the taste, but it's grown on me. I suppose the same could probably be said of any of the ones I don't like, but I'd still like this one better. It's bitter like Rock Star, but it's sweeter, making it more drinkable.

Final question to those who imbibe energy drinks: Do you think they actually work? I find that a 16oz can of Monster in the morning helps me get rid of the grogginess, and helps when I need to keep things going a little longer at night. If I drink 2 cans at once, I get a bit wired. Not jittery or spastic, but a bit wired. I don't like doing this though, even when I "need" it, because when it wears off, I either crash hard, or the residual effects keep me up when I'm ready to sleep. It must be the "other" stuff they put in it, because caffeine and sugar really don't affect me. I drink Mt. Dew and Coke by the liter, even before sleeping, with no ill effect.

Red Bull helps to give me a boost if I'm a little down but I've found that if I drink it before I play sports that it makes me a little jumpy and doesn't help at all.
Rock Star  ... I like :D Yes it is a little bitter but that gives it just a little more of an edge. Great for when you pull an all nighter and still need to keep going or when you want to stay up late. Rock Star also has a herb(?) in it called milk thistle(sp?) which is supposed to help your liver recover/rebuild itself from damage (drinking). All I know is this stuff clears your liver out, watch when you go make #1 in the little boys' room ;)
Amp is similar to Red Bull for me. Same for Sobe.
Do not: Drink multiple Red Bulls and then consume other caffeine containing products. I had a bad experience a few years ago with I think 3 or 4 Red Bulls and a few caffeine pills trying to get a lot of energy for a concert. Hours later I was still messed up from it and was to the point where I couldn't concentrate on something and thoughts would just leave my head instantly. Not cool at all, and please, save the lectures :)

Can you get TAKE OFF in the US of A? Tastes like Red Bull (just an itty bit less sweet, which IMO is even a slight improvement) and it's much cheaper.

Jolt Cola is another awesome high-caffeine drink, but I haven't been able to get my hands on a few bottles of that stuff recently.

I prefer Rockstar as my high power energy drink. A little something I developed for long distance cross-country driving is this...If you drink down a 1 litre of Dr. Pepper enough to fin in a Mt. Dew Amp, pour it in and mix, it makes a delicious drink. It also takes the edge off the amp, but gets you a nice awake feeling.

Energy drinks? What are those? I drink a few a month, cases that is. I prefer Monster to Red Bull. I also drink one called Bawls, that tastes kinda like Sprite but with loads more caffine.

Red Bull runs me about $30 a case from Costco, but the trick there is my mom does that shopping so I don't need to pay for every case. I can buy it by the can where I work for like $1.50 or probably at cost if I got a case of the stuff. Works alright I guess, one can will wake me up a bit. More will get me going and going like the Energizer Bunny.

Monster gives me more energy, two cans in a row and I am wired. Haven't tried more than that, yet. I like the warning on the can saying not to exceed 3 cans a day. My goal in life is to dirnk 4 cans in a row and see how long it takes for me to drop dead.

Usually I have one or two energy drinks a day (I mix them up, trying to keep a case of Monster, Red Bull, and Bawls on hand at all times). Plus coffee mostly at work. My schedule doesn't favor my getting sleep, get up 5:30 for school. First class starts at 7:00am, and finish a bit after 12:00 noon. Go home, eat lunch (as I usually need to skip breakfast), do studying, homework, etc. Then go to work around 3:00 or 4:00, as long as I haven't gotten any calls about problems with the system that need my attention. Get home between 9:00 and 10:00pm. Eat some dinner, maybe relax for an hour or so. Finish school work for the next day, check email and get to sleep by 12:00, hopefully.

It amazes me the amount of money corporations are able to glean from humankind for liquid.

Bottled water, who'd have ever thought that one of the most basic needs would be bottled and sold by the pint.

Soda, burning away our stomach linings while making billions of dollars.

Coffee - $5 a cup at a trendy coffeehaus? Puhleeze....

And now these energy drinks.

Bourbon's expensive, but at least I'm sure what I'm getting! :p

I would never buy bottled water, unless it is some type of emergancy situation. The markup is just crazy, think along the lines of 300 - 400% . At least with energy drinks, and soda I get something that I can't get from a rain puddle or by turning on the faucet.

Alcoholic beverages are a whole nother story though. ;)

My favorite energy drink is bawls. I like it better than amp, red bull, sobe, monster and kmx.

on a side topic....

do any of you ever worry about the health effects (long or short term) of drinking products such as this? i have a 4-5 red bulls/week, but it still sort of freaks me out to be thinking that i'm drinking liquid crack.

I'll have to second the vote for a good strong cup of coffee. And not the expensive yuppy trendy stuff.

At least with coffee I'm getting an all natural drink. Civil war soldiers on the march use to chew coffee beens on the go. I've tried it and it works. Make sure you have the beans well roasted.

I like what was probably the original energy drink in the states. It is one called Lipovitan. Imported from Japan, doesn't give me the shakes and lets me sleep when I need to.

Where might one find "Rock Star"? I have to take painkillers with Tylenol, and have about 4 drinks a week, and would like something with milk thistle in it.

You got Circle K's in Texas? Everything I listed is available at Circle K here (as long as some other ones, including Bawl I think, but haven't tried it).

Little super marts or gas station stores should have it. For just the milk thistle go to Drug Fair, I know I've seen it there.

I drink this stuff I got from quixtar called XS energy drink, its caffeine and sugar free, but has lots of herbs(ginsing, taurine), and like 2000% DV of vitamin b-somethingorother.. doesn't have the same instant kick like a red bull, but it lasts for longer periods of time, plus I can have it still after giving up caffeine.

ps. no, it doesn't contain quarana, cola bean extract, or any of those other fancy things they disguise caffeine as either.

I've tried most of the commonly available ones, and the Monster drinks are the only ones I continue to buy.
I wish we could still get ephedra products. None of these energy drinks comes even remotely close to hitting like a Thermadrene.
