Engine backfire

Guys, I have a Toro Timecutter ride on mower with a single cylinger Briggs & Stratton that when I turn the engine off I get a single gunshot like report with a nice 6" or so flame! It runs ok and this is the only issue I can think of.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

It's a pretty common occurence with B&S engines,it really doesn't hurt anything, some of the later engines use an anti backfire solenoid that shuts the fuel off going into the carb when the ignition is shut off but that doesn't even work all the time.I have a tractor with a 14hp opposed twin on it,if I shut the key off with the throttle about halfway open,it doesn't do it but if I idle it all the way down and then turn the key off it does.

Thanks mate, yeah I always run the throttle down before I shut her off, I will see if the half way shut down works. Good to know its not a real issue.

Speedy replies, very cool! :D
