I have been working with 8670, 15N20, and 80CrV2 primarily and have some O1 on the shelf. I am considering trying W2 for the Hamon capability. My kiln is an old Paragon modified with PID controller/thermocouple and capable of reaching 1560F maybe tad higher.

8670 and 15N20 are my favorites.

I heat treat only 1-2 at a time and been using a 1 gallon paint bucket can as the container. For cost and managing a container, I'd like to stick with 1gallon if possible.

To date I have used Canola oil warmed on a hot plate with thermocouple temperature measurement and would like to step up to a formal engineered quenchant. One reason is capability to use it at room temperature and to remove the warming of the Canola as a variable.

Can I get suggestions for a quenchant. I have seen Park 50, DT 48, McMaster Carr 11 and 28second oil discussed.

thanks.

I believe parks 50 is the only one that doesn’t require preheating. Usaknifemaker sells parks 50 and parks AAA in 1 gallon sizes. Most other places I’ve found parks was 5 gallon sizes (which is a lot of moula).

I also do all simple carbon steel in Parks #50 at room temp. If it is really cold, I warm it to around 70-80F degrees. When the outside temp is between 50F and 100F it seems to work fine.

I have the 11 sec oil which I no longer use since I got the Park 50.
Invest in the Park 50, you can get higher hardness form your quench
