English patterns?

Hey guys, been a while since I posted here.
I thought I had my addiction licked when I 'saw the light' in the Peanut pattern, but well, you know how it is... :D

I'm English, but I now live in the States.
Through my interest in straight razors, I've become enamored with old English knives.

Unlike my straights, however, I wouldn't want to use an original knife as an EDC, because it's a lot harder to control the environment of your pocket knife than it is your razor, and pocket knives are subjected to a lot more wear and tear.

So, my quest is simple; I'm not after particular brands or models, but general authentic English patterns that are still made now.

From what I can tell, they are pretty thin on the ground. All I can come up with are the Gunstock and the Senator.

I know a lot of American style patterns were produced in Sheffield, but I think a lot of them were made for export rather than domestic sale.

Care to educate me?

For an authentic English pattern that was popular in England, you would be hard pressed to come up with a better example than the swayback lambsfoot. There are some English makers who still produce it - Trevor Ablett and A Wright come to mind. Look at some of the posts by Jack Black, he has a nice example from A Wright.

Thank you sir. Here's a few pics of that particular knife, which I love dearly, but will today be posting off to another forum member :)

Is the gunstock an English pattern? And the senator? The Schatt English Jacks resemble knives I have seen in older sheffield catalogs.

Here is one of my Sheffield English knives, an A. Wright & Son swayback.

Nice Ettrick Jeff  What's the fit and finish like, it looks good?

I think the famous Barlow is also originally made in good ol' England.

In general, I think that jackknives and penknives are pretty traditional made knives from the UK.

Thanks, Jack. I won this in a giveaway back in April from that scruffy British chap we know and love!

F&F is good, minor gaps between liners and spring, but tight as a drum, beautifully rounded handle slabs, and took a nice edge.
She's a winner!

Excellent. I'm not even sure they regard the gaps as a fault, I was really surprised when the Trevor Ablett I got the other week didn't have any! :D I think AW has QC issues, but if you find a good one, they're outstanding, and the Ettrick is certainly a very iconic English pattern
