A representation of an English scalper blade mounted in deer bone. The tang of the 7 1/4" 01 blade is full width and made longer for extra strength. The tang is secured into the slotted bone with two iron pins, then wrapped in deer rawhide which is protected with a generous coat of spar varnish. The knife is fitted to my standard center seam sheath. Hope you enjoy a look.

Thankyou for the kind words. The pitted finish is done with cold gun blue and Clorox bleach.

Wick, as usual superb work! Your work always has such a distinct style and quality to it. I think I would recognize your work with out any dialogue on the piece!

What weight of leather do you use on those center seem sheaths?

Do you do something to the leather to harden of strengthen it, after you have the sheath sewn and then turned?

Very nicely done knife and sheath too. I've always liked that type of stictching. Yes can you devulge a secret or two how you do it?

Bruce, it is a simple process, but requires a set of smooth faced blocks. I used 1" maple, faced with 1/4" micarta. The sheath is layed out as a side seam, but cut with only minimal clearance to the blade. Using a close stitch, sew it up. After it is sewn, I grind the seam down to about 1/16" beyond the thread in the blade area. This helps to keep the seam straight during the next process. Then, I have dummy knives to shape the sheath with. I soak the sheath in 91% rubbing alcohol, turn the seam center, then I hammer hell out of the seam to get it started towards flattening. Then insert the dummy blade and align the seam. Then it is put between the two blocks and squeezed tight in my vise, and left to dry until the next day. Then I usually oil it well. If you decide to try it, let me know, and I will give you more details.
