Hi everyone,
If you look at waynorths thread titled " oh my gosh"....well this is my end result of Charlie's and my deal..(although I did have to put in a little extra :D )

I have to admit that I am very very pleased with the knife, its in great condition-it realy is...one happy Kiwi here.
Thanks for your time in looking, I hope you like it.
Duncan.

Real nice!! Original sheath?? I don't know much about this type of knife. Looks like it was intended for the American market of course, with that etch.
I notice a gap in one pic. Is the pommel loose? Makes no difference, IMO - just curious.
Great score, Duncan. Glad it got there safely, and that I could contribute a small part!!:D:thumbup:

Hi Charlie..you did more than contribute a little-it was the whole package-so thank you.

I would put big money on that the sheath is original-in the photo there is a slight gap between the guard and sheath but when pushed carefully to-it fits too snug to be from another knife.
Yes you are right..the Pommel is only SLIGHTLY loose-the only wiggle in the knife-and it is very minor, there is of course a crack in the bone, and as you know this is most common, I wouldnt be surprised if some asks if the handle has been replaced-but I siuspect strongly this is not the case, its just an old knife that has done well to get here in the condition it has-and man...I am thankfull for that.
I understand that this may not be so big for others out there-and thats ok, but for me...this is a beaut...Im really happy.

At first glance you may tend to think that the whole blade is bent-or at least the tang-but it is bang on-I have straight lined it and everything-it is the rake of the spine that leaves the tang-climbing UP towards the centre of the blade...normally on Bowies/ Bowie styled hunters you see a completely straight spine that remains level ( I hope this makes sense?)

Thanks Duncan. I was referring to the gap at the pommel, but you answered my question. The sheath looks right to me also.
Congrats on a nice knife!

Apologies for waking up this old Thread here, just a quick question on the knife, do you think the handle is Bone or Ivory?
Thanks very much in advance.
Duncan

(Edit-oops sorry folks, not thinking right-as I was going to wake up Bernards Thread as well - go them a bit mixed )

My guess would be that it is Ivory. But that's all it is I'm afraid; a guess. The lateral lines in it (not the crack) reminds me of other Ivory I've seen. Beautiful knife regardless.

Wow, that's a beautiful knife Duncan :)

It a true treasure Duncan. Without holding the knife I can only assume it is bone handle, the second pic from above gives a strong feeling of bone.
Mike

dear sir
it is bone and sterling silver most of the sterling marks are at the base of the sterling caps .this is a nice one the older they get the thicker the blade and handle get it looks like every thing is there and intack and yes this was made for us sales iv had some that look like they used a butter knife handle on some of there bowies.... nice

Yikes! I missed this thread the first time around, so thanks for dredging it back up. That is a REALLY nice one, that anyone should be proud to have. Super cool, I really love that style of knife; the old sheath knives out of Sheffield were really something!

That's a beauty Duncan. I'd say the handle is bone based on the visible pores especially in the second photo. Are there any hallmarks on the ferrule or pommel? Looks like silver tarnish but maybe plated. They could also be pewter.

Thank you for your kind comments, I have a thought of selling the knife, as I need to pay some pretty serious medical bills, so I want to gather CORRECT information.

It will be a shame to see this one go, but it needs proper storage to keep it as it is now, such as a humidity controlled cabinet, as it is at risk of rusting where I am.

I appreciate all of your kind comments and help my friends

S-K I apologise, your question, no I don't think there are any markings, I am with you in thinking that they are Pewter!
