Fairly new fellow to embellishing- trying to do a bit of research and determine the best path for engraving. Im not looking RIGHT NOW- but I am trying to get my "ducks in a row" for budget planning and start to look at options (within 6 months).

I am preparing by trying to learn to draw and do calligraphy- If I can draw what I want- it is easier to communicate ideas as well as express exactly what I "see"... Any particular hints or books you folks have used that helped? Im putting in about an hour a day to practice with doodle time as much as possible.

I have read and looked at several engraving threads in other forums- As a new person I will most likely start out with hand gravers and hammer/chisel setup as I was gifted a set of used and fairly worn older gravers and handles. The Crocker Arm was broken so that I know I need to replace. But I don't even want to TRY the gravers till I get a solid foundation... in sharpening and proper use. (looking at formal instruction as well- just know I would spend more time trying to draw than engrave- thus the drawing practice)

I was trying to evaluate the Lindsay System versus the GRS- Both systems have proponents and detractors- What are the real differences to real world folks?

I appreciate the efforts and knowledge here- and look forward to the replies! Be safe and as always stay sharp!

Another system you might want to look at is the N Graver machine. It's much less expensive than most other machines. It will cut very deep, and yet is controllable for reasonably fine work.
I also have a GRS System 3 . It's great for fine, light work.

No. It requires an air compressor.
The NGraver is basically a handpiece on a flexible shaft machine. It could be portable.

Sorry Bill- I just read what I wrote- apologies I was in a hurry... I meant to ask about the ease of setup and takedown. Portable was a poor choice of words. I am looking at having to move the bench over the next year several times.

Moving any of the engraving systems should not be a problem.
