Hi guys, the kitchen Knife project is coming along nicely. Ive sanded to 2000 grit, there are still a few marks in it but otherwise finish looks good.

Still need to fit handle to it but its getting very close now!

Im going to have it engraved with the happy couples names, and have a couple of questions about engraving.

The engraver Im in touch with tells me laser engraving is less permanent thn a rotating diamond engrave. Is this true?

Is there any risk of damage to a Nitro V stainlesss blade at 59 HRC?

I dont wanna get it broke at this stage!!

Thanks

I've had folks laser engrave some of my knives after they were finished. Came out nice, the ones I've seen.

Make sure that the engraver is using a FIBER laser. Fiber lasers cut metal, but are expensive.
Many engravers are using the much less expensive CO2 lasers- which will only mark steel by using a paint-which the laser fuses to the steel. It doesn't last.
As far as mechanical engraving, any jeweler who has a diamond drag pantograph engraver like the New Hermes models can engrave your blade after heat treating.

Useful info guys, the bloke I know says he has a rotary diamond engraver. Are these not suitable for post heat treat?

Generally, diamond is not used for rotary engraving. Rotary use carbide bits.
Diamond is used for drag engraving-where it is literally dragged across the surface, leaving a very IMG_4430.JPG
bright cut.
My mark and "Springer" are done with diamond drag engraving.
