Engraving a Pocket clip

Hello, I am thinking about getting my pocket clip engraved for my Ontario RAT 1. I'm getting it done by the TSA chapter at my campus. Will getting it engraved on the flat part that's raised up (doesn't make contact with the pants) weaken the overall strength of the pocket clip? Also will the fact that the clip has a black coating effect the engraving process?

I have no idea how engraving works, but if it uses heat, then the paint will melt, if it scratches the pattern, then the paint will scratch off.

Depends on how it's engraved.
Laser or hammer?
Hammer would be more damaging to the clip.
Laser will remove such a small amount of metal it will be fine, and the paint shouldn't melt enough to cause any problems.

Yeah its a laser engraving. Thanks for the help. Is $2 a reasonable price to have it engraved?

$2 sounds very reasonable, and it should not affect the strength of the clip.
