Engraving Kershaw Chives?

Has anyone had any experience with getting either the Kershaw black chive, or the rainbow chive...engraved?

Say, just for example's sake...I wanted to get "To my sweet darling on Valentine's Day, love Balicat"...;), engraved on a black chive....(even though that's way too many letters for the size of the knive, I know)...does anyone have any suggestions or success/horror stories on the matter? And, I'm wondering if anyone's seen how the Ti and boron oxide coatings come out looking after being engraved?

Should I bother, I don't want to "mess it up"...any other suggestions...is it bad to engrave the blade?

Thanks in advance,

Balicat

Engraving on a blade raises one key concern: most engravers are used to working in brass or gold or silver or other fairly soft metals. Blades are hardened to 50-60Rc. The problem is that the corner jewler may not know that. He'll be in for quite a surprise when he tries to engrave on blade steel for the first time. So, look for an engraver who is experienced in engraving on blade steel.

Oh wow, it's not even blade steel we're working with here, it's the blades boron coating, which is way harder. You'll may need to find someone who can laser engrave that puppy. A carbide graver might work too, but you'll have to ask the pros about that.

I know nothing about engraving but wouldnt it make sense from a durability standpoint to make the engraver out of diamond regardless of the material being engraved. You can always vary the force being applied.

IInstead of engraving (especially for a female friend of yours) i thinjk you should be looking into anodizing titanium. Chives have titanium coating that ca be anodized (and it is anodized to produce "rainbow" effect). Getting different colors from titanium anodizing is just a matter of applying certan voltage at certain current for a certain period of time. Just as with engraving they can put whatever text (or picture) onto a titanium-coated handle (or pure titanium for that matter), in any color you should desire - although pure red seems ot be most easily atainable.

Look up "titanium anodizing" on Google (sans quotes). Lots of interesting finds, it's funnay how it seems to be easier to "draw" a line (text, picture) onto tutanium coated slab rather than producing the rainbow thingy on it.

Thanks for the ideas and info you guys....the Chives are already purchased, and I was just trying to figure out if it was possible to have then engraved. I think I might "abandon ship" on that idea and leave them as is...no sense in possibly damaging the beautiful surfaces of these knives.

Maybe instead of a Chive for V-day I should have gotten him a nice, big machete and had it engraved?! :p Then I could have had an entire poem put on it! Hmmm...ideas for the future...

Thanks again you guys...

Interesting. Could you all recomend any laser engravers?

Plus this ano thing sounds very interesting. I had no idea that you could create letters with it. I just assumed that the process couldn't be controled that finely.

You can do engraving on blades. It's frequently done. Just make sure the engraver is experienced with this sort of project.
