This topic came up before, but I did a search and couldn't find the thread(s).

Bill, you've posted pictures of engraved khukuris before; I seem to recall one with a dragon, anyway. What sort of things are "typically" engraved onto the blades, and are there any special meanings associated with them? If an engraving is requested, how long does it take to receive it from Nepal? It's never too soon to start Christmas shopping, ya know...

Hi Bruce:

After the blade is finished if it is to be engraved we take it to one of three or four Newari engravers we like to do the job. The standard engraving is the dragons and some Tibetan symbols which have a religious significance. Newaris are either Hindu or Buddhist and those who do the engraving are usually Buddhist so I guess that's why they stick to the Tibetan symbols.

However, we have put engravings of tigers, elephants, yaks, owls, deer -- just about any animal common to the subcontinent -- along with the Himal, trees, flowers, etc. And we have engraved individual owner names in Devanagari. Ghostsix recently received a special engraved edition which he may comment on if he sees this.

We can generally get the engraving done in a week. It takes longer to get the knife made.
But I think we can get just about anything done by Christmas.

Uncle Bill

Thanks, Bill.

The Himal? Would that be mountains, as in the Himalayans? The closest word I could find in my dictionary was Hymen, who we all know is the greek god of marriage.
