Engraving Question

Mates:

I've recently had a couple of my favorite EDC's (Co-Pilot, Police) engraved on the handle with my initials. I figure I'd never trade or sell these knives (so I'm not worried about them losing value) and if I ever lost or they were stolen I figure it might help me recover them. My question is, I'm thinking of doing the same thing to some of my G10 handled knives so I'd have to have them engraved on the blade itself vice the handle. Will this affect the strength of the blade or make it more suceptable to rust, etc. I'd really appreciate your thoughts to any potential pitfalls or downside of this idea. Thanks much. -Rick

Will this affect the strength of the blade or make it more suceptable to rust, etc.

Yes.

Will the affects be significant?

No.

The important tip about having blades engraved is to look for a jeweler who charges you more to engrave on blade steel than on conventional metals. This means he's done this before and knows that blade steel is significantly harder than the ID braclets and loving cups that he's used to working on.

I am the Musical Director of the Bladeforums.com Marching Marimba Band. Bladeforums.com is the only online knife discussion site that has its own marching Marimba Band. It's an important part of what distinguishes us from other knife discussion sites, and I'm proud to be its director.

Visualize Marching Marimbas.

If you ever decide to broaden your musical horizons, I used to be very good on a Jew's harp, and as a kid was a virtuoso on the nose flute.
