Greetings!

I got a nifty new Buck Alpha hunter in s30v steel (buck 194) and it is a knife that I hope to someday hand down to my kids (my wife is preggo) and even grandkids.

My wife wants me to engrave my last name on it, however I have some concerns about how that will affect the strength and rust resistance of the blade.

On the 194, I was hoping to get the engraving on the side of the blade where it has the BOS symbol, I was hoping to get my name engraved by the "Things remembered".

Thank you for your thoughts!

Chuck Buck carries to shows a hand held electric Dremel engraver which he signs knife blades with. The tool is not pricey, probably around 30-40$. Look for one of these and once you get it practice with it. Then engrave your name on the blade. It does a shallow, script mark which won't affect the strength of the blade but may create an area for rust to start. DM

David,

Just for your considerations, recently, all I have ever seen the Buck 'boys' sign with is a air driven micro grinder. They have bottled air on the floor beside their chair. You can get these from the Zon and Bays but are usually over the ocean made. I think they went to this engraving method because of the special steels. These little pencil-like devices run at a much higher speed than a Dremel. Does your resident artisan use any of these for anything or only hand cutting.....I bought one for the attempt at learning to jig - bone scales (several elk leg bones I have). So far my efforts look more like jabs and jerks....

She uses GRS air driven tools with a chisel tip. Which works well on non-heat treated metals. This would have difficulty cutting hardened S30V. DM
