I am interested in locating a quality engraving company to engrave some knives (expensive) to give as gifts. Also, has anyone had initials engraved on their blades? There is very little space elsewhere for the engraving.
I am in the Washington,D.C., MD area if there are any local suggestions.

Thanks for any feedback!

Dave,
You might try your local trophy shop as they can probably handle the initials. For more detailed engraving I had a link but lost it... However, the price is by the square inch depending on design. I believe the price for the design I was looking at which was pretty involved was around $30 per square inch which may give you an idea on the price you may be looking at. You might try posting in Custom area or a similar 'hands on' part of this forum for more specifics.

Sorry I couldn't be of more specific help and good luck!

Two words for you: Brooks Burt. He's in Wisconsin, but you can see samples of his outstanding work on his website. Do a search here to find the web address. I had him do some elaborate scrollwork a couple years ago on a blue Almite Navigator. I still never tire of looking at it.

I have had two knives engraved by Brooks. He is a true artist. He put my initials on one of mine and then surrounded them with his excellent artwork. I wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

His site can be found here.

I just faced this problem with the custom knives made for my daughter's wedding. The local jeweler who engraved all the trophies locally in Phoenix (they are Mad Dog knives) was simply unwilling to try and engrave on hardened steel.

I finally imposed on an anonymous knife maker who has a very expensive engraving machine, and he did them as a favor. Very reluctantly.

I would suggest going with the person recommended above.
