Engraving the titanium handle...?

Are there any folks here that can post pictures and their experience with engraving or carving designs on their Sebenza scale(s)?

As titanium is quite a bit harder than steel, I don't want to just take it somewhere where they do steel (i.e. 'bowling trophy') engraving, but am looking for a good result, and am wondering what some of you have learned.

I'd like, initially, just a name or initials stamped or engraved on the non-lock side scale of my small, left hand sebenza. Am going to consider a floral/leaf design along with that.

Also, if you know of somewhere/one that would take a CAD or hand drawn design for application to my knife, please let me know.

Thanks a million.

Have a good one.

You can contact CRK directly and see if they can do what you are looking for. There are several people here that have done it.

Titanium is actually quite a bit softer than steel, especially if the steel is hardened.

You could easily get something like enitials done at any engravers or you can ask CRK, as already mentioned.

I'd say contact CRK or someone that knows how to machine titanium. While titanium is softer than steel, it's a tough metal that is a pain to machine. I have done deburring at a machine shop off and on and in my quest to learn more about machining I have heard more than once that titanium is a pain to machine. If you know what you're doing, not too much of a problem, but compared to titanium, aluminum seems to be a cake walk.

Titanium can be a pain to grind and machine, I find if it gets hot at all it starts to gaul and skid
on bits and belts rather than "cut", but for engraving it's not going to be a huge obstical at all.

CRK will perform the service, if its on the lock side it will cost around $30, if on the other side its more expensive. Oh yeah, I am talking about engraving words, not designs.

Definately Call or Email Heather at CRK. She helped me exclusively when I was deciding on what to come up with for my "NCIS" engraved knife I had done by CRK. She helped me come up with this and it was all done through emails. The price is: " To set up our CAD for the words you want machined on the face it is $60 per line and engraving on the back is $32.50 per line. " The prices may have went up a little, I had this done this spring. What I did was find a pic of a sebenza and used the "paint" program on my computer to put wording on the knife in the pic to give me an idea what I may like or not like. I have this pic blank if you would like me to email it to you, PM me, then you can play around with it like I did, I got the pic on jerzeedevils I think and the funny thing was, I was going to get the knife ( top one in pic ), but an unexpected bill came and I had to let it go.......lol. Enjoy !

Here are the pics I edited and emailed to Heather at CRK. As you can see from the pics to what I received is nearly identical. Heather and CRK are simply the best.

I changed the engraving on the back as you can see so it would not be so scrunched up.

Somebody has already done the NCIS engraving.

The NCIS engraving is the one I had done at CRK and I EDC it. Great Job all the way around. Was just sending examples of what you can do in the "paint" program and how good it looks after. I sent numerous emails to Heather while designing this to see if colors could be added, whats fonts, what could be done and what could not, she IS the Greatest ! Enjoy !

Thanks, nyefmaker, that's good info. Love your knife too; that looks awesome. The depth and clarity of the text is just what I was thinking of, plus adding a graphic element as well. Good to know you can send them CAD data for reproduction.

Thanks a lot!

The engraving was done by John Aldridge, who engraves Ludwig (the most famous name in drums Beatles, Zepplin etc.)high end snare drums, as well as others like the Kenny Aaranoff signature Tama. He's "the Man" when it comes to drum engraving, and an old friend. It's all hand done, like 20's drum engraving. Did it as a special favor....... Bart1

Bart1 -- Beautiful work!!!

BTW, re: vintage kits, I like Ludwig, but I'm a Slingerland man from the heyday . . . :)

I have a great selection of vintage snares, including Radio Kings, etc, Check my website WWW.rockinrobinguitars.com and go to the store tour. I have very few drums listed ..... anything particular you are looking for? Bart1

Beautiful store you've got there, Bart! Never collected vintage gear, but was a player for sure. First decent kit in high school was a used Slingerland Model 80N in none other than . . . white marine pearl, of course. Now, I just own and play modern stuff. Tama Starclassic Maple, Mapex Orion Series, DW Collector Series, and Yamaha V-Drums.

Well, enough of drums on a knife forum . . .:o

I have to figure how to get my photos from the link to the forum.....!! Have plenty of drums ,cymbals, Chris Reeve etc! Bart1
