Here's a good one. Actually never found one when I was there but know folks who have.

hehe. I think I remember seeing an article about a couple guys who were fishing and caught a WWII bomb in a lake. !!

Better a bomb than a mine, methinks. :D

Incident that occurred one afternoon in Afghanistan about two clicks from my tent; International mine clearing team member inadvertently touches one off, tore up pretty bad, died later. Field ambulance trying to get to the wounded individual runs over another mine, destroying the ambulance and killing two of the three occupants of the vehicle. In the chaos that insues, yet a third mine detonates, killing one and wounding another. Total mayhem for that afternoon, four dead, two seriously wounded. No shots fired, no enemy engaged, but a battle that went on daily, and still goes on in many parts of this world.

I hate mines, can't find the words to say how much, get twisted in knots thinking about it, I hate mines. Won't tell you some of the things I've seen, don't like remembering them.

Funny Story,
We live on the Tx Gulf Coast, so there's a lot of shrimpboats coming and going. Well, several years ago one guy found out that there was great shrimping in a federally restricted zone that he wasnt supposed to enter. All was going great for him until he pulled up an unexploded 500 lb from WW2. Apparently it was a federally restricted zone because the AAF had gone and dumbed a bunch of their surplus bombs in the Gulf of Mexico. So, not being able to just dumb a live bomb over the side of his boat, he came back to port with it, but as soon as he reported it, they slapped him in cuffs and hauled him off to jail since i guess its a felony to bring an explosive device into port. The bomb squad from Houston came down and blew it up about 10 miles from our house, and it shook the windows it was so powerful:eek: .

I agree with you 3000% Sarge. Really long after the effects of even a nuclear bomb have mostly gone people can still be killed by mines left from long ago conflicts

No personal experience (thankfully), but one of my uncles got really heated up over two WW II perils: mines and snipers.

Where is Dolly Sods? I assume WV, but whereabouts? Sounds like a great place to hike...maybe. Reminds me of some areas of Camp Grayling, MI, where I used to go to deer hunt. Some areas are restricted because of unexploded ordinance. I always wondered what I would do if I saw a great big buck walking across a restricted area. Would I take the shot knowing of the peril to get the deer out? Never watched one of those areas long enough to see deer...fortunately. I always do better if I don't temp myself. ;)

I've never encountered a mine, but I've found some odds and ends out at the Camp that probably shouldn't have been there. It's what convinced me to stop sweeping for souvenirs with my metal detector. EMF+50 year old fuzes = boom.
