Anyone tried to do such a thing? It would be nice if I could enlarge the thumb hole on the renegade.

Good luck. Once the steel is heat treated, it's super hard.

Plus, you couldn't exactly widen the hole without making the top part thinner, which would make it weak. Or you'd have a wierd lopsided hole.

You'd have to have some very tough, high speed equipment, I would guess.

Doesn't spyderco use a laser to cut the hole? Seems like I saw that in one of their videos.

Anyways, it would probably be cheaper/easier to just buy a military. :)

You haven't seen the beast, haven't you ;)
I like the military, but I think the Renegade something different from the mili.

Basically I think that enlarging the hole with 1 mm or 2 is feasable and it really feels the difference. Think of the Copilot and the Meerkat.
But also consider that an enlarged hole could make your thumb hit the scales while opening - at several models, of course.

Well, I haven't tried enlarging something as large as the Spydie hole, but I have enlarged a thumbstud hole to accomodate a different and quite larger stud on a 440C knife (non Spydie). I used a Dremel grinding bit attached to a drill (didn't have the Dremel tool). It was very slow going for such a small amount of metal. I also broke 2 bits by putting too much pressure.

With the larger Spyderco hole bigger and more robust bits made for drills can be used and you'll probably not break the bit. Go to a hardware store and search for what looks like a cylindrical grinding stone mounted on a metal stem. It also helps if you leave the knife locked open and clamp it still while grinding out the hole.

Just remember that some steels will have their "heat treat" altered if heated too much. Keep that blade cool!
