I don't see Entrek knives mentioned very much on the forums. I'm interested in a fixed blade knife and have looked at a bunch of knives, but I keep coming back to the Entrek Ranger. It has a 9.0" long X .25" thick 440C blade. It is called a Persian style blade with what looks to be a sharpened false edge that runs about 3/4ers of the blade length. It comes in a kydex sheath. The handles are black canvas micarta. Check it out at www.entrekknives.com

There is also a model called "Bison" that is thr same as the Ranger excepy the Bison has no false edge, more of a bowie style..............................and now I'm 'twext and 'tween!

I have been looking at that knife too! I live about two hours away from where they are made and wanted to pick one up there if possible. Haven't had a chance yet. Let me know how you like it. Wish I could check the feel and balance for myself in person. This knife has features I want..I would have a good good sheath made for it though.

Are you talking about a leather sheath, or another kydex sheath? It'll be another month before I can pick one up as my knife money for this month is already going for a Blade-Tech Rijbak and an INOVA T-3! But I will write up a report when I do get one, unless that Bark River Rogue gets to me first!::eek::D

I was thinking I would ask Bob Schrap to make me a leather one if I thought I would like to take it into the outdoors excursions or a Semper Paratus sheath for around town and the occassional car camping trip. Like I said I would love to pick one up while checking out where they are made. I know of about four places that make knives in USA but are more or less a two man factory of knives. These kinds of knives I think are pretty okay entry knives and are not exorbitant. I have been dissapointed though, after seeing custom knives with awesome fit and finish I don't get really jazzed about lesser creations anymore...jaded me.

I would look at a ranger RD-7 or RD-9. You should research both on this forum and I doubt you will find one negitive post! Justin has some of the best warrenty and customer service anywhere. Plus if you go to Brigade Quartermasters and sign up for the catalog you get 20 bucks off your first order. You can have one delivered for 100 bucks.

Thanks for the suggestion dave, but I want to go with the Entrek.....this go round that is:D I got to thinking about it and decided I didn't really need a 9.0" bladed knife and I decided to go with the Force Recon and it's 7.0" blade that is 11 7/8" overall and made of 1/4" 440C. This knife still has that Persian look to it with the sharpened top edge and an almost upswept tip. The dropped handle butt also helps give it a classic look in my eyes. I guess I'll see when it arrives next week and of course I'll do some first impressions.:D:thumbup::D

Well, In the Randall Made catalog they go on about "most people order a knife that is too large for thier purpose" Guess your scaling down to 7" might serve you well! Hope you enjoy it!

I think they are right about the ordering a size to large a knife.
I have been considering a Barkie Rogue but that Entrek Buffalo has really piqued my interest. I like that it is not to thick and 440C is one of my favourite steels.
There is nothing wrong with Rangers unless you need stainless but I find the RD series fugly They are generally from to thick a stock to make good cutters although because they are custom made I am pretty sure you could order one thinner.

A RD9 with custom ironwood handles is a pretty cool knife and a heck of a deal though.

Once I decided to go with the 7.0" blade it was between the Force Recon and the Buffalo as they are virtually the same knife, only the Recon has a sharpened false edge and the Buffalo doesn't. If the Recon turns out to be the knife I hope it is, then a Buffalo may be next as it has a distinct bowie influence. Btw, both are made from 1/4" thick 440C and it sounds like Entrek uses a painstaking process to get the best that 440C has to offer! Also, I really like the Cobra for a 4.0" bladed knife and it's false edge is left so the buyer can sharpen it if so desired. Actually it will probably be my next Entrek as winter is coming on and a small fixed blade like the Cobra will be easier and much less noticable to carry, especially in what looks to be a high ride kydex sheath.

Yes, I want to explore 440C more. I wonder if its had enough use and feedback to really show the claims some make that it makes a fantastic blade. It is a function of geometry and heat treat and I want to try Entrek's. I belive alot of favored factory knives would have been even more liked if a better steel and heat treat proper to the steel was used instead of focusing on saving and cost cutting measures. I just think 440C got overshadowed real quick with some other steels. I think Gil Hibben was geting at least o1 tool steel performance in edge holding and toughness out of 440C when he pioneered its use. If I like Entrek, then I can safely grind some of my own knives with a flat grind and get my blades heat treated the same at the same place and have the same or better performance to my design. For a small blade I like Entrek's Badger, but Ranger first. It might be cool to take the handle off and put more polish on the blade and handle and then a good leather sheath. Maybe more work than making one from scratch? Also I am not overly eager to try the sharpened pry bar school of knifemaking. I belive in trying things and coming to my own conclusions with expedition suggestions drawn from posts on Bladeforums. I can see a less bulky knife with a hollow ground blade used for knife cutting and not really chopping or King Konging around and its more than tough enough as well as being more effective at slicing and easier to sharpen than a thick edge. Thats the features I want to try.
