Hey,

Has anybody got their hands on one yet? I know it's pretty new but I'd like to see a picture of it in someone's hands if possible. Or maybe some first thoughts.

looks exactly like a rip off of the bushcraft northwest knife designed by Mike Lumio (which i own and can say that its an excellent knife). That Entrek is priced at $150 with 440C; i'd rather pay the extra $25 and buy the original made in O1.

looks like a scandi-grind but in the description on their website it says that its flat ground.

very interesting.

Yeah, but I heard their heat treat is extremely awesome. I also really like the micarta.

it does 'irk" me that it's not even a scandi or flat. It has a secondary bevel apparently. But I still want to try one out. (They're $100 from entrekusastore.com)

I can see why everyone wouldn't like them though, I mean com'on 440c?

Upon checking out that northwest knife it loks appealing as well. I dig the bamboo-esque handle.

Accusing a good maker of ripping off a design is harsh. Those little Puuko designs have been around since before toilet paper and all of Ray Ennis' stuff is full tanged so when the two meet up, there isn't going to be a ton of variation on tiny bladed, big handled fin inspired knives.

I personally think that Entrek is nice and utilitarian.

Hmmm....its not straight backed like a puukko though is it, nor does it have the classic fishy shape?

I like the design, but it is remarkably 'akin' to the BCNW-O1, the similarities are quite obvious, the differences are less so.

did not mean to offend you, i guess rip off was a poor choice in wording. However, while puuko designs and other scandi knives have indeed existed before the invention of toilet paper, the similarities between the two designs are a little too much dont you think? The placement of the tang pins, the lanyard hole, the blade shape and the handle style. The end product may look and perform differently but i was merely pointing out by "looks" (regarding the pictures) that they seem to be a carbon copy.

Sorry if you were offended.

Can't tell much from the lousy picture they put out but if they scalloped the scales like the BCNW-01 I think "ripoff" could be considered appropriate. If not it's like a fattened Mora or a zillion others and some of those may have scallops also.

What's with the "it's not your traditional scandi"? Guess we'll have to wait for a couple of decent photo's and based on the web site those will have to come from a purchaser.

Entrek probably does 440C better than anyone else. This steel has a lot going for it and when done right is a heck of a good choice.:)

Ray Ennis, Entrek USA here. I was sent this thread so I thought I would post a reply. First the picture of the Forester is of my first prototype, and yes it is very similar to the BCNW 01. Which by the way I prototyped and made the first 75 or 100 pieces for Mike Lummio. I may have made the knife in the picture. I also asked for and recieved permission to make a knife similar to his using my standard materials and style.
As it has evolved the Forester has a more symmetrical handle with a rounder butt and is made from 440C with black canvas micarta handles and ss allen head cap screws holding them in place. It is a scandi grind but i have found that some people are very particular so i put the disclaimer on the site. So far everyone that I know of that has a forester is very pleased with it.

I would like to thank all of the people that support me and say all those nice things about my knives.
Ray

Folks should hold their water and do research before accusations flow, has nobody learned from previous threads ?

As far as the style there are probably a dozen that look similiar if you google "pukko" , "Finnish knife" , 'Scandinavian knife' , etc... Big deal.

Neat looking knife but the lack of a guard always frightens me. :D

I picked up one of these fine knives from Ray at the Eugene knife show yesterday, fantastic!!
I didn't like the BCNW that I had and quickly passed it on. This one I like much better and will be keeping. I love 440C and micarta for heavy use here in the pacific northwest
and yes I have and have had many scandi grind woodies and bushies in various high carbons and even one in S30V "super-steel". ;)
This Forrester is going to be a real user I have a feelin!!
be safe... Ted

Hey Ted, how is the foester working out for you? Don't mean to bring a dead thread back to life, not like this is that old or anything.

How do you sharpen yours? How has the 440c been? It seems like an odd choice for that type of knife, but I've heard thier 440c acts like 1095.
