Entrenchment Tool?

I need a good foldable shovel. It will probably just sit in the cargo area of my truck, but if it is ever used it will be for digging my truck out if it gets stuck (minor off roading while hunting, snow, etc.). Of course it might have to be one of the S's in SSS :D :o

Is the Glock E-Tool good? I don't want to spend a lot of money if I don't have to, but I am willing to pay what it takes for something that won't break on me.

Thanks!

Sure-Fire. The Glock e-tool is a good one. If you are not going to have to carry it on your back the best digging e-tool, bar none, is the GI M1951, with the shovel and pick head. It is longer and gives a better swing, and the pick is way ahead of the Glock for digging in hard ground. I tried all of them (GI, Cold Steel, Glock, current GI folding. M1951, and the Fiskars) digging foxholes for 30 minutes. I took photos evey 10 minutes and measure the depth. After 30 minutes the M1951 was at least 18 inches further down then any of the other shovels. The M1951 is heavier and longer, but in your truck it should not matter. If you cannot find a M1951, then the next best is the Fiskars, and it is compact and stronger than the others.

John A. Larsen: Where does one find the M1951? Or the Fiskars for that matter?

Thank you Mr. Larsen!

Also a good question:

And finally, one of the reasons I asked about the Glock E-Tool is because a friend of mine is selling his unused for a discounted price. Knowing that, you would recommend it as a last resort?

Hi Sure-Fire:

If it's simply going to go into the back of a pickup truck, why not get a full-sized shovel from the hardware store? It will be easier on your back and will accomplish digging jobs faster. They are also very inexpensive.

Yeah, cause this will fit right in with the Harley and NASCAR discussions, thanks.

...and the other threads about shovels, and other threads about all kinds of gadgets & gear other than knives.

I have an SUV so I figured a foldable shovel would save space and since my friend was selling one it reinforced getting that type. But you are right, I should just throw my short handled shovel into the back whenever I am doing something that I might need it.

Hi Sure-Fire:

If you're going to toss the shovel into a Rubbermaid-style box stored in the back of the truck, a folding model will definitely be more convenient and space-efficient.

Save the cost of a shovel & don't take your "bungalow on wheels" off tarmac.

I have a Glock in my truck though have used it only a few times [not for getting unstuck ] like most of my emergency gear.Very compact ,has a usable saw. You can't hack at things since it's very light . I also have at home a WWII army shovel .They bought that when we were kids so they could put us to work !! Kid sized yes but I've found that folding shovels can be very handy for certain jobs such as confined areas and where one hand operation is needed. Just like a short handled sledge hammer !

I spent a bit over 10 years in the army, so the G.I. shovel is the one I'm used to. Over the years on Camping trips with the family I've tried other types, but I always come back to the army issue one I'm familiar with.

It works as a shovel better, has a good pick, and is very handy for Self Defence. I think you can still get them cheap from places like Major Surplus.

I carry one of these in the back of my pickup (in the tool box) and I love it, have used it to "unstick" myself (usually no one around where I go and I don't own a cell phone), dig potty holes, dig a small mote around my tent (for water directing purposes) the tent bottom stayed dry in a rain storm, used it as a hammer to pound in tent stakes, and on and on ad nausium etc.... I love them. Mine is an old GI model without the pick, I think it may have run me a five spot.

Sure-Fire. If you friend gives you a good price on a Glock e-tool, then it is a good deal and will more than likely serve you well.

These things ROCK. Solid as hell and inexpensive. I think if I put a little bit better edge on mine it'd make a good axe too.

The German shovel is almost as good as the M1951, IMX. I don't like the point geometry as well. Since the US shovels are getting hard to find, the German one may have to do.

I sharpened one edge of my old issue M1951, so it could be used as an axe. It was adequate for clearing fields of fire and similar limb cutting jobs. I carried a file in the canvas carrier to touch up the edge.

The new issue trifold shovel is nicer to carry, but I wouldn't want to dig in with one under fire. I always described it as "an e-tool designed by someone who never had to dig in."
