Entry level job where you can sit a lot?

Broke my leg in August, and it's been hurting a HELL of a lot more in the past 2 days after I've been released to return to work(2 weeks ago). My current job(produce clerk) has me on my feet for 8 hours, lifting 40 lbs boxes regularly. That, and my department will blow up soon because my incompetent boss managed to lose 4 more guys(out of a department of 16 people), can't seem to find time to train the new hires, and wants to welcome back the part-timer with the recently broken leg by slapping me with 40 hours(certainly it helps with the medical bills, but maybe not so much if it ends up sending me back to the ER).

So I figure a new job is in my best interest, and if the sharp pain in my left leg is any indication, my work is probably exacerbating the injury enough to re-fracture it.

Besides the sitting requirement, I have people problems(namely that I hate people:D). To be more specific, I might say or display an a**hole attitude without being consciously aware of what I just did until the store manager pulls me into his office to chew me out.

Please don't make utterly useless suggestions for me to change that unless you're willing to fork over the thousands of dollars for the necessary intense electroshock therapy:thumbup:. There's a reason why my GPA is 4.0 and I'm looking into IT/Software Dev/Web Dev fields. Book smart, not street smart.

By "entry level" I mean something I can do right now with only a high school diploma, and make more than minimum wage(kind of a necessity if I want continued healthcare on this leg).

My first suggest is you go back to your doctor and tell him the pain you are in. You may be able to return to workmen's comp or whatever you were receiving? If you were getting any comp while you heal?

Second is to start your own business or at least the goal of doing such? That's the way most people make any real money anymore? Design a business that has you doing what you want to do the majority of the time.

I became a knife maker & sharpener out of a love for what I do as well as my ADD and sometimes anti-social tendencies when it comes to working with or being a middle level management personal.

In the meantime, Perhaps a job where you work a radio in dispatch for a trucking or medical outfit?? Just an idea that came to me while reading your post.
Its been an employers market for far to long here in the USA and I really don't see that changing to a pre 2008 employee's market anytime soon if ever again? I wish you the best!

I was in your shoes like a week ago, for quite a while. Roughly 2 years of looking for a entry level job. I was trying the trade route. Thankfully I had a job up until a month ago. So I was only unemployed a few weeks. Honestly, it's tough. I mean like really tough. At one point I lived in my car for almost a year. I could go on and on regarding this topic. Basically, if you know someone to either lend you the time to train you for a trade which is what I would consider an entry to a job, you are golden. But then that doesn't count and you would probably not be writing this. So, I figure you don't just like myself.

Speaking from experience here... Unfortunately Uncle Sam wasn't so truthful with me so I dropped out of college to join the service back in 05, and didn't learn much from that experience except that I should have stayed in college like everyone my age and got my degree. which I'm finally getting my Engineering degree. I guess what I'm saying is take any job you can get these days and focus on your dream. If it's to be the IT guy then do it. I know you will make a whole bunch more money than a produce clerk. Good luck on your journey.

I was getting TDI(Temporary Disability Insurance). I had an appointment two weeks ago, during which my boss scheduled me in that time frame before taking off on his vacation. I was concerned about the pain I had prior to my return to work, but decided to cancel it after an abrupt improvement the weekend prior. My next monthly checkup is on November 14th.

I'll certainly call for either a bump up in the appointment date or a walk-in visit if the pain worsens, as I still have some prescription painkillers left over from the surgery I had to help manage the pain, though I sincerely hope I'm only imagining those occasional popping sounds/sensation when I walk on the leg. I suspect I might be pointed towards the ER again, which I might put off until something breaks, or the painkillers don't work on it.

The issue with this is that while I have an aptitude for everything(based on my grades, at least intellectually), I don't have a particular strong suit over another(say, math over science). And while I have various interests and hobbies, I'd say they're all a means to entertain me and not something I enjoy.

My choice of career(geeking out behind a computer) is simply a consideration of the work environment and how tedious I perceive the work will be(compared to my previous choice of Accounting).

Starting a business requires capital(which I have set aside for college and my medical expenses), and I expect customer interactions will be just as high volume as my retail job. And as I stated before, even if I had the capacity to do it, I wouldn't know what kind of business to start. My indecisiveness is borderline schizophrenic.

I imagined myself doing that, but I would personally find the experience more enjoyable as a hobby and not a source of income. Besides which, unless I have true talent in the field and can command exorbitant prices like Ken Onion, I doubt I could live here and do that.

Eh, I have this "thing" where I have a hard time making out the words coming out of my phone, much less a radio. I have a hard enough time making out the lyrics of most songs. Might explain why I prefer Orchestras.

Only thing I had in mind was something like a data entry clerk for an insurance company.

Usajobs.gov

They are hiring right now. GS-07/9 does not require more than HS for Ed. If you are disabled or handicapped you can get a preference for hire.

Do you have a CDL or experience driving a truck? A CDL is pretty much a golden ticket in most places. The company could be laying off wharehouse guys but they're always hiring drivers.

Good luck. I would recommend working on your people skills. Don't get me wrong, you can secretly hate them but life will always involve some politics. You are young and could work on the ability to get along with people. And who knows, maybe after some time, you might find some you can stand or even like. Good luck. And I hope you get well soon.

eisman made a great suggestion, and you may qualify for more than one preference.

If memory serves, 50 years ago, intellectual testing and Military Service also would have been preferences.

Good Luck,

Mike H.

CALL THE DOCTOR MONDAY MORNING!
If you are still in this much pain at your age there is most likely something wrong? 60 plus days later, I don't think you should need to still be taking narcotics? Have them put you back on the TDI if possible?
Maiming or disabling yourself so that you have a limp, constant pain or worse is not smart! OK?

Try driving a taxi, or perhaps telemarketing to get you by until you can sort out your health issues. You could also take courses part time to upgrade your resume. It sounds like the job you have now is hard labor and you could use this as an opportunity to move up in your work.

You should have a graduated return to work plan that your doctor determines

10/20/30/40 hour weeks that sort of thing.
