EOTech magnifier vs ACOG TA26

Anyone into optics? I'm looking at adding a medium range optic to my carbine. I'm either wanting to add a 2x EOTech magnifier or a TA26 "mini" ACOG.

My argument for the magnifier (it would be just the magnifier, in addition to my 512) is 1/2 the price and I have had a long time love affair with every EOTech I've ever owned, no wash out (assuming I have it cranked up) and it's what I'm used to.

My argument for the ACOG (in a LaRue mount): lighter weight/less rail real estate, no batteries, no moving parts, did I say no batteries.

Let's hear your arguments, anyone have both? Please note the TA26 "mini" is 1.5x so it'll be much closer of a comparison than your typical 4x ACOG

Larue, Bobro, American Defense, nobody outside of Trijicon/Weaver make a mount for the TA26 (AFAIK). It uses a funky screw mount. The TA44 and TA45 are 1.5 power and uses the LT105 Larue mount, and the TA47 is the 2 power and uses the same mount as well.

I've never been a huge fan of magnifiers, low eye relief, bulk on the firearm, they just never really floated my boat but that's me. I like the 1.5 power ACOGs, they have amazing eye relief, clear glass, bombproof and look proportional on an AR. My biggest thing, the circle dot reticle is nice, but I think the dot and the circle are too thin, at night with the trituim you have to "search" a bit for it. A thicker reticle would be awesome, which the TA45 provides a triangle and a cross hair reticle while the TA44 only does circle dot.

So far, I really like my TA44. I've wanted one with a green reticle for a long time and lucked out into this one. I think the TA45 would have been a touch nicer but seems like they're harder to find one to look through than the 44. So far though, I'm happy. Just because this BS winter we have going on I only have 60 rounds through it with the ACOG. I'll have a new trigger this week sometime and I loaded 150 rounds for that last night :)

Last year sometime I started a thread asking about the smaller ACOGs, and I think I only had 4 replies, and had a PM conversation with a member. Seems like a lot of people when they go ACOG, they go 3 power on up so 1.5 power experience is hard to find.

Hm, thanks for the info on the mount, a QD is really important to me. Does the trijicon mount's for the TA26 have a QD option available (Or at the least a thumb screw, as long as it's not tool-install only I'd be ok)?

This is off topic (feel free to answer here or via PM) but what's your opinion on your anti-rotating pins? Did you get them to correct a problem (wear/receiver life) or just because? Care to post a parts list?

Here's my baby, sorry for the poor pic-

For the 26, I think there's just a giant knob (hehe) for the mount. No throw lever or anything.

As for the KNS pins, they were part of my lower parts kit so I just used them. They look good, kind a PITA to time right sometimes but they look good.

As for the parts list, you mean complete or just for the lower?

TA44SR-10
Larue LT105 mount
GG&G folding rear sight
Troy marked Spikes front folding sight
Spikes Tactical 16" government midlength upper
Seekins/Spikes 13.2" SAR rail
BCM Mod 4 charging handle
Magpul CTR stock
Spikes enhanced buffer kit
LWRC Sling attachment plate
MOE+ grip
Magpul MS3 sling
Seekins Precision SP223 Gen 2 lower
Spikes Tactical Enhanced LPK with KNS pins

I think that's it. Only additions is a POF 4.5 pound drop in trigger is going in it sometime this week and I want to get a Seekins flash hider for it.

The good ol money pit. Have a 10.5" pistol in the works and I want to change up my 308 AR after that project

The good ol money pit.

I hear you there brother, I have made major changes to my carbine multiple times, new upper, new barrels, optics, each big change could have paid 1/2 my monthly rent or bought another pistol but does the gun shoot any better after? Probably not, it's just different and I have another part for the shelf.

My next big project is a suppressor (filed for my stamp in early December). I'm building one myself using pressed K baffles in a 1.55" OD stainless tube. I built one for my .22's last summer, then rebuilt it after blowing it out on my AR lol.

My parts-
30% lower completely machined & anodized by me, the serial # is GOZ00001 (Goz was my dad's nick-name)
Colt 6920 upper assembly w/CAR gas system (sold my original RRA upper on the colt lower when I finished this lower and need to come up with some cash fast)
Cut down front sight base to clear rail
Rock river CAR FF rail
EOTech 512
Magpul F&R BUIS
Wilsons combat tactical trigger tuned by a local smith to 3.5# pull weight
Springco white buffer spring
heavy buffer
BCM extractor & trigger springs
Magpul RSA (rail sling attachment)
Magpul AFG1 cut down (not pictured)
Some no-name brand grip w/ battery storage
VLTOR offset scout mount w/ foursevens quark tactical (now on the opposite side)
Stag LPK
Yankee Hill Machine Phantom comp (I have a surefire externally threaded flash hider I need to drill out the pin on the YHM and then re-pin the SF sometime before my paperwork comes back for my can)

Let me ask you a question back on topic...

Do you ever get any wash out going from shade/dark/indoors to sunlight with your TA44? That's the one thing I'm worried about not liking, and not really being able to experience in stores before purchasing. I guess my reasoning for being worried cause the smaller package means the fiber optics has less light gathering ability and [possibly] slower reaction times to extreme differences. I don't mind if its a little slow dialing down doing into dark, I just don't want to loose my reticle for even a second going into the light, especially with all this snow on the ground, the daylight is so overpowering when everything's white I pretty much have to keep the EOTech at 20 during the day while its snowy.

Also how bad does it fog up going from cold to hot (say from 0* outside during winter to 70* indoors, or during the summer going from in the A/C to 90* out side?

Washout? My response is a little skewed since I haven't had it long and we've had all this snow and arctic BS lately.

When you're purely indoors and you're looking at a target indoors, the reticle shines pretty good. When you're outdoors looking at a target outdoors, same thing. But, when you're indoors looking outdoors say at a car or trees or snow (ehh), even if the fiber optic is directly under a light indoors, the reticle doesn't shine. The circle dot is still there, it's a black reticle, but it doesn't glow red, green, or amber. But at the same time, if you're indoors looking outdoors (say by a window) and any natural light hits the fiber optic, it'll shine again, even on snow.

With daylight, that little fiber optic has been great and doesn't have the problem some ACOGs have of "star bursting" or bleeding.

With the LT105 mount, the optic points naturally, so even if the reticle is just black, it's pretty easy to dial center.

As for fogging, there's none, I suppose that's due to the argon gas inside. I had it in the trunk of my car yesterday while at work, but the time I got home it was 1 degrees F last night, took it inside with the wood stove going, no fogging.

EDIt: Well, left the rifle in the car again, and it's just as cold tonight as it was last night. Brining it into the house tonight, fogged up like a SOB. Must have not checked it immediately after I got inside.

Columbus is a touch of a drive, but I'm used to long distance driving if you'd want to meet up somewhere in between. Since Ohio raised the speed limit to 70 in some areas the state goes a little quicker :) But I'm sure the drive it takes to meet somewhere you could find one local to check out. There's a gun show in Columbus coming up if I remember right

For future purposes
