EP problem - please help

I've had my Edge Pro for about a month and have been getting spectacular (for me) results on every knife I've used it on. However, I just got the Chosera 5K & 10K stones for it and they actually seem to make the blade duller.

After a couple of problems early on, I learned to use the stop collar. But with the 5k & 10k stones, it doesn't cut paper nearly as well as when I stop on the 1k.
I checked this on several knives, so it is likely my technique rather than the machine.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Allen

Hello Allen,
I think it might be a combination of two factors: 1) The factory Edge Pro stones are badly underrated- I have had excellent results even compared with Chosera and Shapton stones, and 2) a toothy edge sometimes passes the paper cutting and similar tests better than a more refined edge. The toothy edge is sometimes better for everyday tasks (slicing a tomato), while a refined edge is great to show what we can do as sharpeners.
Good sharpening,
Dave

NO !

how can such false information still be spread on a well document forum such as this one ? that's my nr1 gripe when talking about sharpening.

if you cant slice a tomato with a polished edge you just can't sharpen properly. end of he story. i've been cutting tomatoes everyday of my life for about 10yrs with knives sharpened up to 10k jis and maintained on 0,5 micron CrO. sorry.

back on topic to the OP, do you use sharpie before the 5 and 10 k stones ? do you use edge trailling or edge leading ? haveyou tested for micro burrs ? how much of a slurry do you keep on your stones ? what's your exact stone sequence nad how does the edge behaves at each step.

The knife is my EDC folder. Steel is not great, but not horrible.
When I first got the EP & profiled the edge to about 40 degrees inclusive, I touch it up with EP 400, 600 & 1000 stones. When first setting up the 400, I use the sharpie, but after that, I rely on the stop collar. I use both leading and trailing strokes (back & forth). I check for burr's at each step before moving on to the next stone.

I use water on all of the stones, but don't keep a slurry on the stones. I'm not sure how I would do this. I guess my knife steel is too soft & doesn't take long enough on each stone to work up the slurry. Should I be using a slurry stone before the 5K & 10K stones?

At each step, I also check the edge with a 45X loop to be sure that the stop collar is working. It's pretty easy to see a problem in the scratch pattern if the angle is not the same as the previous stone.

I don't check how the edge behaves at each step. How would I go about this?

Should I be using only trailing strokes at 5K & 10K?

Thank you!
Allen
