Looking to see how my EdgePro likes the Chosera stones as I currently have the stock EP stones. Heard people like the Chosera line. I saw Chosera sells a kit for 600/2K/5K. is that a good natural progression? Or any reason to get any in-betweens like the 800 and 1K? Of course, I may try the 10K down the road for a nicer finisher.

I don't see why they even make the 600, the 400 is a far superior stone.

I think the 600, 2000, and 5000 often make it into a sales combo is because they are not sold as much as the 400, 800-1000 and 3000. I see it more as a stock liquidation because they don't sell.

Naniwa themselves recommend the 400, 800, and 3000 grit stones. The 5000 and 10,000 are considered specialty use stones. Not that great on PM steels with Vanadium but great on everything else and very enjoyable to use.

For a guided system it's my opinion that the Shapton Glass stones would be ideal, slower wearing and more capable with PM steels.

Great info. I did not know that Naniwa actually recommended those 3 stones. If you know where this might still be published I'd be interesting in reading more on it.

I'll take another look at Shapton as I do have several steels with some Vanadium.

btw, what's the issue with Vanadium and Chosera?

Vanadium is harder than the abrasives in the chosera stones. Only CBN and diamond are good for fine polishing of steels with high vanadium content. Silicon carbide stones can do a decent job of creating a serviceable apex on those steels but to really do what needs to be done you need something to sharpen with that's harder than whatever makes up the steel you're sharpening.

Sharpening a high hardness alloy content steel with anything less than SiC is basically fruitless. not because you can't sharpen the steel matrix, but because you can't sharpen the alloying elements that make that steel top shelf.
