I was looking for a non-chisel ground (these aren't chisel ground are they?), americanized tanto bladed (3" +/-) knife. I posted such a thread here, and thanks to you guys, I researched a few possibles. Was considering both the SOG mini-Xray Vision and the Mini-Autoclip (tanto-blade).
My first concern is, how is the lockup on these knives? Sloppy lockup is a no-go.
The mini-Xray vision looks like the winner to me, except for the combo edge. Do they make a plain-edged one? Deep carry clip (metal) and arc-lock seem like positives to me.
The mini-auto clip (tanto profile), BG-42 steel (I don't have anything in this steel yet), and Blackened blade option is a plus for me. Opinions?
Thanks again.

try a search for x-ray vision, or, vision. I personally have an x-ray vision - feels really good in the hand, excellent lock-up, good size and nice grinds. But the G10 vision is even better - the blade is satin-finished and G10 kicks zytel's butt all the way to the moon. You can get G10 vision for around $120 on the forums.

super-stuff. oh, they're sharp too.

i have a vision w/titanium handles.cool knife but i bent the clip somehow(?)
just tried to fix it today:( -i unscrewed the clip and bent it back to straighten it.
bad move, now the clip is broken.
IMO the clip design should be a solid piece of steel(like spyderco) instead of the skeletonized design they use.

For those who know me, the SOG Night Vision (pictured in the attachment below along side my Glock 27) was my much beloved EDC for about three years. I love G-10. I love the super-smooth action (let me repeat: exceptionally smooth action!). I love the Arc-Lock’s solid lock-up with zero blade play. I love the aggressive grindlines and award-winning knife design (the SOG Vision with titanium handles won Blade Magazine’s Import Knife of the Year several years ago). I love the edge-holding ATS-34 steel.

Does this sound like a hyped advertisement or a sappy sales pitch? I no longer work in management for SOG Specialty Knives & Tools and am not bound to blindly support the company’s products to guarantee my continued employ.

Rather, this is a true romance with a truly great knife. For years, I’ve lauded the Night Vision in the SOG Forum here on BladeForums.com (and elsewhere through this site). As a result, many members have bought a Night Vision (or other member of the Vision series, though I’m not a big X-Ray Vision fan…it’s a “Zytel” weird-out thing with me) and written me notes, sincerely offering thanks, for like me, they quickly fell in love! :)

Anything from the vision series is pretty nice. I like them all even the Zytel version.

Although I do have to say that both the Zytel and G10 version seem exceptionally hard on the pockets for wear and tear. Those clips are adjusted super tight and the Zytel version almost feels like it is G10 beacause it is so textured.

This is just my experience.

the picture in the attachment looks like the vision not the night vision.looks like titanium handles not g10 in that picture.

It's G10. You can see the texture on it. Maybe its the light reflecting off it that makes it look Ti.

Here's the SOG Vision (titanium handled) and my Sig Sauer SP 2340 (.40 S&W). Compare this picture with my prior. After drooling, you'll see the different. ;)

Manowar: I echo Mr. Anderson's opinion of the night vision. A top-notch carry - smooth, sharp, tough and practical. I carried mine for a year, then passed it to my brother (who taught my daughter how to roll a kayak). Although I miss that knife sorely, the idiot grin on my brother's face makes the loss worthwhile. He carries and uses the night vision every day as a "mobile florist" (landscaper) for a large midwestern city. He'd been through many different edc's; now that he has a night vision, nothing else will do.

I have a G-10 Night Vision. A really nice knife, Ron's recommendation convinced me to get one. It is still in the top 5 of folding knives in my collection. Pity it is discontinued.

I have a few. Very nice knives. I actually find the Arc lock a bit smoother to operate than the Axis lock, in part because it is anchored at a pivot point, and therefore has less tendancy to move at an angle other than perpendicular to the handle.

Additionally, when the blade is closed, moving the lock stud gives the blade a small push out of the handle, making an opening flick effortless. With practice, I have gotten the opening flick to occur with very little momentum, which in turn minimizes the impact of the blade tang on the stop pin.

I had a Night Vision, and in an impulse sold it off. Within the week I regretted unloading it. I searched hard to find another. So hard in fact that I wound up with two Visions (don't ask  ).

I love my Night Vision also! My employment is also not bound to SOG, so it too is an honest opinion.
I customized mine, though, and thereby voided all warranties on all of these knives... LOL!... at least according to one expert...;)

Sorry about the broken clip. Just remember that one of the reasons for purchasing a great knife from a great company is great ongoing service! Contact the fine folk in the Consumer Services Department at SOG and they'll send you a replacement clip.

Phone: 888.SOG.BEST
Email:warranty@sogknives.com

Both of the leading folk there (Loretta & Mike) were hired and trained by me ... so they must be good! ;)

BTW…looks like some of those I assisted in “matchmaking” with a Vision have started checking in here! :D

Take care, all!

I still like the Tomcat and Sogwinder 2 even if the both of them weigh a whole pound together.

thanks Ron,i got the same advice on the SOG forum-i called the number and left a message, will try again monday during "normal" business hours.

Hi Borinquen,

The CS staff there really good guys and assisting with clip replacement is among the easiest warranty concerns they'll handle (there are a few "clip scenarios" that can become complicated).

After a lot of searching I got my (lefty) paws on an X-ray vision and it rocks! It's my EDC for a year now and ya can't find any better for the buck !

The only SOG folder that I have owned is a Tomcat (well, actually a couple of 'em), and I can say that the Tomcat is the most SOLID folder that I have ever owned. That one will NOT let you down.
