I got a pretty beat up BK-7 in a swap a few weeks back. I cleaned up the edge and the spine. Now I want to strip it, but the previous owner "two ton" epoxied the bolts into the grivory. Is there any chance of me saving the scales? I most likely will have to saw them off right? I dont have the cash for micarta right now, are there (cheap) replacement grivory scales available for purchase anywhere?

I am sure someone on here will hook you up with some grivory. I am (hopefully) getting a BK2 soon, if you havent received any by then I will send them your way.

I am assuming you tried to get the bolts out already? This is a tough one, normally I would say to try and apply some heat but I am not sure how the grivory would handle that. I doubt penetrating oil would work on glue.

Yeah, I tried. The bond is pretty permanent. He even filled The threads with epoxy!

Try heating them up with a soldering iron right on the screw. If it doesn't work, I've got an extra set if you need some Josh.

Thanks fellas, I was just offered a set of cocobolo grips for the 7. This place oozes generosity! I will still try to save them with my soldering iron. (for a spare set) I will let ya know what happens.

A thicker "brush on" type stripper would work with the scales on.

cocobolo?? sweet! Pics are required once you get those!

Hopefully you can save the grivory

Josh if you're still up for saving them, set the knife in the freezer overnight and try to remove screws in the morning..

if that don't work, try boiling the knife a little bit should come right off !!

if that seems like to much work and you have a dishwasher, bingo..

i like easy :D

The freezer worked great, the first turn of the hex wrench busted that epoxy into a hundred pieces.

Thanks guys.

PIX! I don't know why we need em, but we do!

Hmmmm, looks like he just went heavy on the loctite. I bet those nuts will come out too, just screw a bolt in from the inside of the grivory and tap on the head of the bolt with something and I bet they pop right out.
