Epoxy coating...my thoughts.

After my weekend with my BK2 and putting it through its intended use, it seems to me that while the black epoxy coating is a good idea to prevent rust, it just doesn't last. I can see why many prefer to strip it off. So I guess what I'm saying is...why bother? If you know how to take care of a knife, isn't the coating just a temporary preventative measure?

Yes, I like a good looking blade as much as the next guy, a little oil and TLC vs. beat up epoxy seems to be the best way to go IMHO.

People prefer to strip em once the coating wears off, but what people normally do not strip is the handle underneath the grivory which is always a plus.

I think the coating is probably a good idea for most recreational knife users, I mean from a blade manufacturers standpoint. I would venture to say the military would require a coating in order to issue a NSN.

I heard that they still have Harley's in storage form WWII in the NSN system. I wanna find one of those.

The coating is only made to protect the blade while its in shipping mode......;)

I actually like the look of a heavily worn coating. If I ever get a BK 5, it'll get stripped for sure. I'd also like to make some stag, horn or bone scales for it.

get rock texture type spray paint. spray bare metal. doesn't come off easily. cheap. looks not too shabby too. reapply when needed, nobody will notice.

or just wipe dry and oil...

or ignore it...

:D

IMHO the coating is there for the obvious protection from rust, in production to dealer there is no telling how long a knife will sit before it sells.. therefore the coating...

another reason to coat a knife is to cut down on production costs:confused::eek: WHAT !!!

that's right, I have yet to strip any brand knife from any manufacturer that has applied a coating and not found many grinding flaws......

thus the reason to keep down costs, and sell more knives!!!!

makes perfect sense (cents). :)

Yeah, exactly. Tons of tooling marks. I'm curious about these BK 10's we have coming. Wonder if they cleaned up the tool marks considering they are not coated?

Unlikely considering their intended for you beckerheads, of whom are thoroughly informed about tooling marks yet still strip them anyway.

And will always strip any coated blade. Whatever the coatings intended purpose is...a black blade just looks way ro Rambo for me. And in my opinion and my opinion only that makes me look like some kinda wanna be special ops guy. Flame away.
