epoxyless handle slabs.....?

I need some ideas for epoxyless handle slabs - that is, have to be removable/interchangable, etc. (per request)

Help!

Not2sharp has a few blades by a custom maker with removeable micarta scales that store little emergency pieces.
 
folder size screws (these are 4-40) and a threaded boss called an "electrical standoff".......simply counterbore the inside of your slab to swallow the boss, you're home free with removable slabs....

a google search will reveal several companies marketing this stuff......

That's that just about the way I'm going to do the
handle on the collaboration Knife.:) it will act as a placement pin
and hold down but the ones I'll use will be 1/8" it will work great even with dovetails:)

you can buy folder pivot pins from TKS, 2-56 thread
 
Unless you have quite precise placement of the bolts on the slabs or precise measurements of the hole in the tang, you'll find that it is possible for the slabs to move around a bit due to the tiny slop around the threads.

One way is to have TWO locator pins positioned at each end of the handle in blind holes underneath the slabs through the tang that will precisely maintain the position of the slabs. You can superglue the locator pin into one side slab for ease of reassembly. Jason.

the pivot pins, will be the locator pins the way I do it,
so the threads only hold the slabs down, the only slop you can get
would be the holes you make for the pins in the tang and handle material. you choose how much if any..
 
Thanks for the great suggestions so far, guys.

I'm looking to put them on a fixed blade that will get used pretty heavily, ie. chopping, clearing brush, etc.

My main concern is whether or not a screw-in system will loosen with use. I don't mind the idea that you have to tighten it occasionally, but I wouldn't want to be chopping hard and suddenly have it fall apart in your hands. :eek:


which leads me to another question...

Can I use wood slabs with a screw-in system? I really want to use wood, but am concerned that if the screws are overtightened, they'll crack the slabs. I'd like to avoid synthetics, ie. micarta, G-10, poly____, etc.

Dan,install "sleeves" or ferrules into the wood, leave them short enough for the countersinking.
 
Not a bad idea. I could even do that before final shaping of the slabs.

What kind of screw assembly would I use then?
