Equal-end cattle knife with three specific blades, in stainless?

I've been trying to find an equal-end cattle knife with these features for several months now:
  • Clip or spear
  • Sheepsfoot
  • Punch
  • Stainless steel
  • Not made in China
So far, I've had no luck. (The closest I've gotten is my SAK Electrician, which adds a caplifter, and if that's the closest I get I'll be a pretty happy fellow. It's a great knife.)

I've seen this blade combination in non-stainless steel. I've also seen many options without the punch (like most Stockman knives). I occasionally see a "Shapleigh's" that gets me all excited, but the seller says the steel is "probably stainless," and a little research leads me to put the name in quotes because there seems to be some shady history behind recent Shapleigh's knives.

Does this knife exist, or am I chasing a unicorn?

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this pattern.

Why not order a custom?

It probably took me 16 years of collecting custom knives before I decided to take the plunge on custom slipjoints.

You can have 10 decent factory versions like GEC or high end Queen Cutlery, or you can have one custom that will meet all of your using knife needs.

Once I did take the plunge into custom slipjoints, I have rarely looked back....waiting on a Ploppert Reverse Gunstock to show up in the mail at this point!

Good point!

In part, I've avoided going the custom route for this knife because I think it will be prohibitively expensive. But perhaps it wouldn't be.

I'll definitely keep this option in mind.

Schatt and Morgan has made a cattle knife with a spear, spey and punch. Most of their knives are stainless. I don't think it had a sheepsfoot though.

Not that I've seen, at least. They've also done an equal-end with a spear and a punch...and no third blade at all! (Lovely autumn bone on that one, though.)

Might be possible that GEC would come up with a 53 version in stainless, but given their aversion to stainless and the news that they're abandoning the Squirrel etch and Acorn shield, rather unlikely. You never know though.

Pity CASE doesn't do something like this with their Humpback stockman frame, it is equal end, has a cutout for the punch and has Spear master with sunk-joints.

There are not a whole lot of custom makers who are both available to make a knife within six months and willing to make a three blade slip-joint, I have found. I recently was looking for a similar configuration (spear-main, sheepsfoot, small-clip, equal-end) and contacted many including Tom Ploppert, Craig Brewer, Bill Ruple, Ryuichi Kawamura and several other top quality makers. Only a couple offered to take an order and only Kawamura San had a wait under six months.

I look forward to receiving a knife from him in January but the price will be more than three times my next most expensive custom...

That would do it. Preliminary poking around suggests that it's 420 HC, handled in ivory casein, and that they may only have made 100 of them. (Another listing I saw said 85; either way, not many!)

Thank you for settling my "internal unicorn debate, Snipe 1! :D

I found this neat GEC prototype, but it has a fourth, spey blade.

I always worry about rub with production knives that have more than two blades...

That's the kind of price I was envisioning. Not that it wouldn't be worth it -- that is one gorgeous knife!

You could try to find a knife that is close to what you want (like a regular 3-blade cattle knife) and send it off to a modder to have the spey blade converted into a punch. Might be quicker than waiting for a full custom build from scratch.

Good idea! I haven't explored the modding "side" of BF, but I should.

Dadpool, I can't help you in your quest, but I sure am impressed with all of the useful suggestions you're getting in this thread! What a great resource the members of BF are!:cool::thumbup:

Glennbad and Esynx seem to be quite skilled modders. I believe Markesharp may be as well. I have no idea if they can help or not but you can always pester them with PMs. :) There may be others lurking about as well.
