recently aquired a heat treat kiln to heat treat stainless - when a recipe states to pre-heat to 1500 and equalize then ramp to 1975 - what does "equalize" mean ?

For the piece being treated to catch up with the thermocouple.

ok - so just "soak" the piece for a few minutes at that temperature ?

One hour per inch of thickness.
Knives are thin so 15-20 minutes.
