I'm talking about those little gearkeeper thingies, that you probably use for your work ID. I've always had a bit of a problem here. The "standard" leashes are little plastic-housed jobs with weak springs and cotton thread holding the ID. I get them caught and break them all the time.
I started looking for something a bit more robust, but all the leashes with steel cable and stronger springs also were huge, to wit: http://www.tadgear.com/x-treme gear/hammer_head.htm
I wanted something as small as my little plastic jobbie, but with a stronger spring and thin metal cable. Then, walking through REI, I found one of these: http://www.drslick.com/products_reelsnippers1.asp Note the one on the right in the "Clip On" section ... metal casing, metal cable, nicely strong spring, no bigger than a standard work leash! (in fact, slightly smaller, but the leash is a few inches shorter than the cheap plastic leashes).
I removed the second, big split ring, and replaced it with a little metal gate, that I put my ID on. You can use whatever you want, I got mine from AG Russell, it's the same little metal gated hook as on the Deerhunter sheath, in this picture: http://www.agrussell.com/agrussell/agdh-8a.html Go down to the second picture, you'll see the clip on the sheath. The clip doesn't actually show up by itself in AG's catalog, but give them a call, they'll sell you just the clip if you buy a bunch. I gladly picked up 12 of them a few years ago, I use them for everything.
I'm not sure if anyone else was looking for the same thing as me, small gear leash but with metal thread, but if so, you can get them at REI.
