This is a prototype for a Dutch fighting knife model Erik will be doing. This one has a maple handle and Eriks damacus.

Erik asked if I can photograph this knife for an upcoming media project. This is just an experiment. I need to raise the knife higher off the surface and get backgrounds that dont interfere with the knife as this one does. Certain areas of the blade edge and the butt of the handle aren't as crisp as I'd want. I need to get the image to come off the page more. So this isn't really a final anything. Just showing the knife to you guys and my progression making semi-ok images.

non shiny background ftw.

What now Lorien?? You ok?

I want plain wall paper backgrounds. If I use paper you can see the pixels. But I want basic scratchy, stony patterns that are tans browns and maybe reds.

Using sticky tack to raise the knife is an easy way to let the light wrap under it. Also using a white reflector (like poster board or cardboard wrapped in white paper) can light up the front outline for you if you place it between you and the knife and experiment with tilting to throw the reflected light. When you grow a third arm (or have self timer on the camera) hold another little reflector up just so and that clip will jump out at you. Knife pics are fun and frustrating at the same time :)

The knife is raised on a quarks cut in half but its not enough. I need to get more sticky stuff as I cant find what I had, also a background that doesnt clash. I didn't have a background for this- just the table. :) I also want to raise the butt higher.

This is also an outdoor shot. When I do it in my tent I will use a mirror or two.

LOVED your little twist hunter btw!
