Hey Guys,
I had always been curious as to Ernie's introduction into knife making.

Well, after monopolizing his time at the Blade West show I decided to ask him. Ernie told me the first knife he ever made, was of all things, a Balisong. (I hope I didn't just divulge info that I shouldn't have) He told me back when he was training at Guru Dan Inosanto's Old Kali Academy in CA, a lot of the guys were buying the Pacific Cutlery knives. Ernie couldn't afford to spend a couple hundred on a knife so he cranked one out and to this day he still has it.

Ernie if you are monitoring this post how about posting a pic of the knife I'm sure alot of us would be interested in seeing it.

I just thought you all might like to hear about it and if we beg and plead he may take it out of his secret hiding place for a little "show and tell."

I will see if I can't talk Ernie in to digging out that knife and getting a picture taken of it. I will probably have to send it to John as we are all quite computer illiterate.

(I love Bali's)

Ernie have you ever thought about making another one? How about an Emerson production Balisong? That would be cool, I would buy one (or a lot more)

Just to add to my original post, Ernie told me he made a few (unknown number) other balisongs for they guys at the Kali Academy. Maybe we can dig up some of the old guys from the Academy and see if they still have theres. Could you imagine the collectors value of a Emerson Specwar Balisong!

I wouldn't mind seeing Ernie produce a production Balisong. Just imagine "Emerson SpecWar Knives introduces a knife designed for the real warrior "the SpecSong"!" The only problem would be trying to get permission from the state of Kalifornia to design, produce, and sell the product and then we Californians would not be able to buy them. I sure would like to see him produce one thought! Just my two cents.

i'd love to see one myself. I proposed the idea awhile ago and was hot down pretty hard (though later people seemed to consider the ide more fully). I'd love to see one, but they might have to be made outside of Cali, making it a difficult proposition. We can hope though! In any event, a pic would sure be nice.

Talk about collectible.

Ernie, Derek, and John,

Thanks guys for all your work in getting a picture up of "Ernie's first knife"! I can't believe my eyes, a Emerson Specwar Balisong. Not only is this Ernie's first try at knife making, but you can see excellent quality that is so distinctive of his work! Not bad for a lunch break production knife! Thanks again guys for all your work to get this up.

Mark

The knife that launched it all.

Don and I were talking about this knife the other day. It's . . . crude in some ways, but as you pointed out, you can see quality hidden in the knife.

When i asked Ernie about the knife, he laughed and confimed that his first knife had indeed been a Bali that he'd made for himself. I also mentioned that to heat treat it, he had used a torch.

I would hope that my first attempt at knife making looked half as good as his.

John

I . . . didn't ask that. (head hung low)

I would assume it's in the same size range as the old "Pacific Cutlery" (aka Benchmade) Balis.

Sorry

John
