Ernie's martial influences

I was just wondering about Ernie's design influences. What experiences and doctines guide his blade designs? Certainly, user feedback helps in refinement; but the core design principles are Emerson. What forged these principles?

A few years ago, American Handgunner wrote a bit about his training, with pics of him sparring, but the article lacked detail in this area.
(an aside to Ernie's detractors: dislike the knives if you wish, but only fools would disrespect this man to his face.)

If the long time suspects have any insight, It would be intresting to read.

Eskrima, Kali, JKD, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I guess Mary is quite the grappler too.

From what I understand, Ernie is Licensed under Dan Inosanto to teach Filipino Martial Arts Concepts, I don't know if that includes JKD or not. Then, I think the Gracies, etc. as someone else stated.

Very well rounded.

From the web site:

<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">While attending the University of Wisconsin, he double majored in World History and Physical Education. While there he earned a brown belt degree in Kykoshinkai Karate and a black belt in Shotokan Karate.

After graduating, Mr. Emerson moved to Torrance, California to train, fight and compete at the prestigious Filipino Kali Academy run by Dan Inonsanto and Richard Bustillo. While studying there for five years he was trained in Jun Fan Gung Fu, Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali and Escrima, and a plethora of related arts. Mr. Emerson went on to train in Gracie Jiu Jitsu for three years at the original Gracie Academy in Torrance, California and was fortunate enough to train with the founders of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Rorion and Royce Gracie.

Nah, he's a "weekend warrior" and a "wannabe tough-guy-knife-fighter" and I REALLY want to be there when a certain someone "tells him to his face."

Sorry, I'm gonna be laughing about that for days.

What an opportunity though. To be able to train with Guro Dan AND the Gracies.
*sigh* Okay, I'm jealous!

Ken,

That trolling knucklehead we are thinking about, he can say whatever he wants to Ernie. It's just stupid anyway. Ernie will just stand there and smile at him, if the guy got rude, Ernie might as well.

It would never come to a PPV event, as much as we would like.

The morons in that General Forum never cease to amaze me, but, that is the porcelein convenience that let loose the Demon Spawn that went over and ruined James Keating's Forum.

And it was the same old, tired, stinking trash too. "Wannabe, weekend warrior." Then the guy cried like a little kid when James bit him in the face.

PPV event!
LOL
No, it won't come to that I'm sure, but I'm willing to bet Ernie is capable of delivering a verbal beating the equal of any physical beating he could ever hand someone.

Come to think of it, I'd pay to see that too!

Ernie's a punk, and a wimp! What else can you expect from a guy who invented a gimmick like the Wave and made the tactical folder market what it is today! Bla bla bla...

Thanks to all for the replies.

John - I consider myself adept at research; I should have check the EKI website. Mea Culpa.

Follow-up questions: Did Ernie ever instruct weopon arts? If so, as anybody been a student of his?

Someday, the definitive volume of Ernie Emerson's work should published. With dozens of full color, Japanese quality prints, it itself would be collectable.

Not a problem. Ernie has taught knife classes in the past. Our own "dd1967" attended a class last year at Blackwater Lodge. I'm sure they will be more available.

I'd refer you to the following page on the web site. link

As far as a book . . .

You may want to track down "Tactical Knives" by Tomo Hasegawa. A large (LARGE) portion of the book is Ernie and his techniques. Most of the action shots are B&W, but it's an awesome text

As John says, I attended Emersons first class at Blackwater last October. Also with him were Lowell Anderson and Dean Heileman.

Now I'm a Police Officer, Defensive Tactics Instructor and a Medic on one of our Support Units (our equvilent of your SWAT Teams). I have also attended Gunsite and hold an Expert in all of their Handgun classes.

Without doubt, the class that Emerson ran was one of the most in-depth, informative and 'Real World' classes I have been to. Not one minute of the instruction was wasted time and I could tell there was so much more Ernie could have told us. If you get a chance to attend one of his classes, do it. It was worth every penny (sorry cent).

Maybe we could even talk him into a 'Suspects Only' class. Now that would be cool !

Seth,
I have attended two classes that Ernie has taught at. One w/ GSGI and the other at Edged Weapons Conference 2000. Ernie has alot of knowledge and VERY realistic in his theories and applications. He is a excellent instructor and I really enjoyed my oppurtunities to train w/ him.

Hope that helps...

He who conquers himself is the greatest warrior."

"This is the law:
There is no possible victory in defense, The Sword is more important than the shield, And skill is more important than either, The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental."

I can also attest that Ernie's classes are worth every penny. The traditional martial artists really dislike what Ernie teaches. Ernie is one of the few people teaching who has a real grasp of what really works in real world confrontations, and his stuff really works. There is no vodoo magic techniques, just straight forward principles that work. I would love to see some of the trolls in a cage with him.

Personally, I think alot of the strife with regard to Ernie and what he makes stems from the fact of just that.

What he makes, precisely what he makes.

You see folks talking about, "Defensive Folders" and then they admit they are carrying something that falls a little short of that...

I think there is a stigma associated with that quite frankly and this will gain a person like E.E. some enemies.

I think this is where alot of the "wannabe" crap comes from, it's sort of like calling someone a pedophile, you know what I mean?

What defense can you launch when someone calls you a "Wannabe" this or that?

Except to say, "No, I'm not."

The attacks and painting with broad brushes, slopping prejudice around, are just that. They're attacks.

Ad hominem attacks where the character, or characters of the person or persons involved in something become the issue.

What it is, more than anything, is sad.
