error message when attempting to p.m.

When I try to start a conversation with a certain member I got an alert from, I get an error message stating I can't start a conversation with them. What is happening there?

Could it be that they don't have a paid membership? If they're not at least a basic member they don't have access to private messages.

That explains it then. He contacted me via an alert and asked me to e-mail him regarding a knife I have listed for sale on the exchange. I tried to pm him and got the error message. Thanks for the explanation. I posted a reply to him on that thread after he asked me to contact him. Hopefully he will send me an e-mail he can be reached at. Thank you.
