So I have got the green light to stock up on some blades this season as a valentines day present from my wonderful girlfriend and have been eyeing the esee 5 for months now so that's on top of my list but why stop at one when I can get two! so now I got some questions. I spend a lot of time out back packing in the summer and hunting all fall so the knifes will see use and probably hard use as well

1) what is the difference between the esee 3 and 3 mil?

2) why would the 3/3 mil be better than a 4

3) is the 4 to big for edc as whatever smaller sized blade I get will replace my griptillan for edc

4) and last but not least I am also open to other suggestions and options as well so let me know what you think :)

I do not see much difference between the 3 and 3 mil.
If you are getting the 5 ypu can use that for outdoors and if ypu want an edc id say go with the 3 since it is about an inch shorter and much thinner which is better suites towards finer cutting as apposed to chopping. and could be more comfortable to carry.
Just my thought

the esee 3 mil has a sharpened pommel that acts as a glass breaker its not sharp enough to cut you but it impacts glass..then the 3 comes with a modified pommel too where there is no point at all it is rounded..the esee 3 would be my choice for EDC. it is closest size to your griptillian opened like .18 inch with the 3 modified pommel.
ESEE-3P (Plain Edge, Black Blade) 8.31 inch
ESEE-3S (Partially Serrated, Black Blade) 8.31 inch
ESEE-3PM (Plain Edge, Black Blade, Rounded Pommel) 8.19inch
ESEE-3SM (Partially Serrated, Black Blade, Rounded Pommel) 8.19inch

The only difference is the glass breaker pommel and more sheath options. Other than those, nothing at all.

Better for what?

The 4 is 8oz and 9" overall. Only you can say whether that is too big for you to EDC. I have a 4 and can't see carrying it on my belt everyday. But then I EDC a large folder such as the PM2. I do keep the ESEE-4 with me in a Maxped bag in the car.

If you want a good collection that covers all the bases I would get an Izula, a 4, and a 6. EDC the Izula. Use the other two when you are out in the field.
