Hey guys. I am looking for a work horse survival knife. One I can drag through the mud and nearly destroy. I was looking at the ZT 0121 and the Benchmade Adamas 750 and decided not to purchase either. Now I am looking at the Esee 4 or 3 or the Becker Necker (I think it's also called the BK 2). Any opinions or suggestions on which one or any others?

Becker necker is the bk 11. Bk2 is a beast, 5.5 inch blade and 10.5 inches of 1/4 inch awesome. In my opinion, and others will disagree, Beckers are more bang for the buck. If you want a 3 inch blade than bk 11, bk14 or esee 3. If you want 4 inch blade then bk16, bk17 or esee 4. Also check out condor knives as they are probably even more bang for the buck and their 1075 is good stuff too. I currently have a bk2 and bk14. I want a condor speed bowie for a bigger knife.

to complete the above comparison, the Becker BK2 is similar to the Esee 5.

If I had to pick one out of the knives you mention it'd be the Esee 4.
Small enough to carry easily, big enoug to take on just about anything.
Awesome factory kydex sheath, handles available in linnen micarta, canvas micarta and g10!
It's my favourite knife to take with me on dayhikes.

Oh, and this thread needs some pics ;)

I have a large hands (size L gloves) and if the ESEE 4 have 5mm more handle it would be one of my perfect camping/bushcraft blade.

As for becker, I haven't had any yet. But the BK2 is already on my wishlist...

Esse 4 has the best production sheath I've come across, good knife too.
I prefer the Becker BK16, especially if you add micarta scales.

The Becker Necker is the bk11 7'' overall 3'' blade. the bk2 is 5.5'' blade 10.5 overall 1/4'' thick beast.
the bk2 is what your looking for or the bk16/17 also check out the esee 3/4/5/6

Can't go wrong with either. The Ontario Rat 3 is essentially the same knife as the ESEE 3 and can be had for less. I personally love the Becker knives. One that has caught my eye that you may want to check out is the Ontario SP8. The reviews I've seen are very good and it's only $50 on that one site that is named after a river.

I'd look into the 16 if you want something closer to the esee 3/4. For a beast of a knife that will go through hell and back get a BK2 but be warned it's a heafty knife. The 16 is tough as nails but can't do it all like the 2. My 2 has been beaten on for a couple of years and it keeps on ticking...

That esee 4 could very well be my first fixed blade. Either that or a Mora companion. :p

I've owned both and sold the 4. ;)

To the OP: IMO...
The BK2 is what you want if you have no skills and aren't willing to learn any. Or if you just have to have that manly "I can never break this thing" feeling.
If you have some skills but are still rough on your knives get the 4 or the BK16.
If you know what you're doing then the 1/8" thick ESEE 3 is plenty tough enough and will outperform all of the above.

What was it about the ESEE 4 that you didn't like?

As people say, get both. I did. I have the ESEE 4, but I honestly prefer the Kabar Becker BK-16. I don't normally need the strength (and resulting weight) of the ESEE 4 or the BK-2. The ESEE 5 and the BK-2 are an apt comparison. There is nothing wrong with the ESEE 4 and I chose it over the ESEE 3 as at the time I thought I could handle the 4" blade length as easily as the 3". But, I have moved to the BK-16 (or BK-17) for a general performance fixed blade of modest price. It is a fantastic sized general purpose knife that are still tough. You see, I choose knives that I hope I might use. Then I go off and buy a Kabar Becker BK-7 (7") to add to the pile that includes the BK-2, BK-16, ESEE 4 and a few others in the mostly 4-6" blade length. I still really like the Blackjack 125 also. It's hard to choose sometimes and it's nice to have some choices when I head to the woods.

Also check out some of the condor knives in the 3-5" range. And here is a pic of my Beckers
