ESEE-3MIL - clip point or plain?

I'm looking at the ESEE range for a knife to pair up with my skeletool. And I really like the ESEE-3MIL.

But I can't really decide between clip point and plain. I like the clip point for a firesteel and other tasks that dull the edge.

Are there any major draw backs to a clip point I should consider?

Batoning, like bobbystoney said, and being unable to apply pressure to the spine of the blade with your second hand or, if you do, cutting yourself. I often carry the clip point whenever self defense considerations tend to outweigh considerations of utility. If I need utility (usually in the woods), I'll usually carry an ESEE-4 or ESEE-6, so I have less need for a 3" blade for utilitarian purposes. As for using it to strike firesteel, I don't want to dull that edge either, so I use the back of my SAK saw for that.

I prefer plain over the clip point in woods knives. The tip isn't as strong on a clip point either. Just my preference though fwiw.

Looks like I'm going plain. Thansk for the fast answers.

Regarding the 3 over the 4, I want a blade that can take a lot abouse if it has too, but still is a good slicer. And the thiner blade on the 3mil seems a bit more apealing for my needs. Am I on track here or should I still consider the 4?

Once you have the 3 in hand, you'll end up buying more ESEE knives. I think it's something in the blade coating. They are addictive knives to buy.

I have several ESEE-3's (one of which is a 3MIL CP I bought specifically for use with a firesteel) and love them all.

You'll probably end up with both. I purchased a 4 first then decided I needed a 3 for lighter duties and trail hikes. They really do feel and handle differently. You can't go wrong with either one though.

You can say that again! I got the 3MIL, then had to have a 6 (clip point), then an Izula II. Not too long after that, an Izula and a 5. Today I just bought into the group buy red 4...

Good deal! I can't wait to get my Group Buy ESEE-4.

I started with an ESEE-4, then I got an ESEE-6, then I got another ESEE-6, then I bought two more ESEE-4s, then I bought two RAT-3s, but that was a mistake, so I bought three ESEE 3-MIL CPs, then I bought two Izula IIs, then I bought an ESEE-5, and now I'm planning... SOMEBODY STOP ME! : )

I came VERY close on the Junglas, and it's probably just a matter of time, but I couldn't see the use and opted for a Condor Golok instead (better chopper).

Plain edge for a utility type enviroment.

Clip point for a self-defense/combat type environment.
