hey,
i have enough money for 2 knives, and I am thinking about getting either a esee-4 and a benchmade griptilian hg or a cold steel srk and a benchmade 710. which do you guys think would make the best combo.

esee-4 and 710. or, even though it isn't listed as one of your options, replace the 710 with a 940.

money constraints,
belive me if that was an option i would have already gotten it.
i have 70 or so for one knife and about 160 for another, and i found a nib griptilian for 70ish.

I think the 940 is ~120, ~110 for an esee-4. I haven't priced them in a while, so I could be mistaken. nothing wrong with a griptilian, just not a knife I'm a huge fan of. which grip models are you considering? they have the new H20 model which is supposed to be excellent for use around water, it might be a nice counterpoint to the 1095 used in the esee. I think knifeworks has them for around 70.

The ESSE-4 is a beautiful little fixed blade, and the warranty is phenomenal! I'd choose it over a Cold Steel any day.

I don't like the handle on the Griptilian so much. I use my Spyderco Endura a lot more, and they cost about the same.

i already have a spyderco military and since i cant bring myself to use it (sentimental value), i was looking at a good folder i could use, and since i already have a spyderco i was going to try to mix it up a bit. i have handled a sheepsfoot griptilian already and i fell in love with it although it was the 440c model so i was thinking the 154. now i would like to get a 710 but i have to choose between a better folder or fixed. what would YOU do and why. its going to be used for camping and military service. thanks guys.

Cool, a Military is next on my list of folders to buy :D

Sounds as if you know you'll like the Griptilian, so I can wholeheartedly recommend that plus the ESEE-4. :)

Personally, I'd choose a high-quality fixed blade and a cheaper folder. If I were carrying both, I'd end up using the fixed blade for just about everything - they're tougher and usually easier to clean. The folder would only leave my pocket in situations where people-friendliness was important.

personally i would say to myself.. what will i be using a lot... the fixed blade or the folder? then u will know where to spend your money.

me personally i use a folder a lot and aside from camping i never use a fixed. i have a m4 grip and it's the best feeling knife i have.

I have 2 710s and a griptillian and I love them both but I would pick the 710 and the esee 4 over the Srk. I have owned an SRK and it is a good knive but it doesn't compete with an esee. The SRK is a tough knife but the handles are not the best.

i understand the 710 is better but i cant afford a 710 and an esee 4, thats why i have to make somewhat of a sacrafice

dude, just go poke around knifeworks. if you have a budget of 230 you can get both of those knives and still have change for coffee and dessert.

+1, by my calculations you can get both for about $190 there plus shipping ;) Make sure you use the code for the 710

One question, how big are your hands and do you wear gloves often?

I ask because the handle of the ESEE4 is small, I wear a large glove and feel bare handed that the handle is too small for the knife and my hand.

Folder: Grip, endura, Rat-1, kershaw blur

Fixed: have you looked at the swamp rats yet?

When you said military use I thought about how AFAIK gloves are worn often and how that can effect knife choice. The handle and grip of a knife is just as important as the steel and heat treat. When it comes to folders its hard to beat the spidie hole when wearing gloves.

As for FB's the reason you have so many recommendations for SY and Swamp rat is because they are "bet your life on" type of blades. The Swamp rats available now are well within your price range with full size handles that are some of the most comfortable I have ever felt. This is a big plus factor in a knife that sees a lot of heavy use. The steel SR101 aka 52100 is simply awesome, its extremely tough, holds its edge, fairly easy to sharpen with basic tools, and gets sharp like other steels could only hope too.

Their knives are addictive though so be careful :)
