I brought my ESEE-4 and SPOT 2 to Crocker Point in Yosemite. I won't backpack without either now!

Enjoy!

 What a view! Absolutely breathtaking!

Tell me, those messages you can send with the SPOT 2, are they preprogrammed or what? Cause im not seeing a keypad of any sorts.

Ive been thinking about getting one ,especially more now that its been upgraded, cause im a solo-hiker, and i rarely stick to the route ive left my wife.

Wont it catch a signal from inside the packs toplid, or your pocket? I have a Garmin eTrex, and that works just fine under a thin layer of garment/pocket nylon etc.

Nutnfancy did an excellent youtube review of the SPOT 2. Check it out, very informative.

I have read some reviews on REI and the like of people having terrible customer service from SPOT. Seems like a great device to have and for the $100 per year for service after the cost of the unit, it's relatively affordable if you spend much time on your own.

Thanks for the link, that was, like you said, an excellent review!

You can program 4 things BEFORE you leave.

1) Check OK - This can be sent to 10 email or text devices "I'm doing fine - everything's cool. I know I said I'd be back by now, but I decided to stay longer" Or whatever you want. This will send your GPS coordinates too so they can click on a link and see exactly where you are!

2) Custom - Again any 10..."This place is awesome - click on the link and see where I am now!"

3) Help Mode - "please pick me up at this location" or whatever

4) SOS - this is like 911. But you can specify info about yourself...like you have heart problems or you are allergic to certain medicinces etc.

I was solo backpacking and tripped on a log - yeah, it happens. I fell on face first with my full backpack. I was okay, no problems, but I was about 6 miles in the backcountry and nobody was around. If I did break something, it would be nice to know I could call for help!

I missed the other question, sorry.

It might work under the nylon, but I've got a great place on top of the pack for a clear view. Now, when I used the tracker function, to broadcast every ten minutes, my track is interrupted while in the deep forest. Even when it was on top.

In an emergency, I'd also like to keep it easily accessible.

Given this, I would avoid keeping it under something.
