I just figured I'd share this. For the first half of my basic infantry course, everyone was jealous of my nice green ESEE 4. So jealous in fact, that a few of them went and got themselves one.

I wish my phone took better quality photos.

The 4 has got to be the perfect knife for a Canadian infantier. It put any knife anyone else had to shame. Discuss how awesome the ESEE 4 is here.

But is it Canadian Average Green? That's my favorite color name. Also, gotta love that hammer forged bbl on the Colt. Lucky Canadians.

I would rather the 5 or 6 as a military blade unless you absolutely need the knife to fit into a smaller space or something.

The 4 really is a perfect size for most people! It is amazing what kind of abuse it can handle and the usefulness for its length. There is little I can think of I would hesitate to do with an ESEE4

Picture this, you're already issued a bayonet, and you're carrying everything you own and stuffing things in your pants and vest wherever they can fit. The 5 or 6 would either weigh too much or simply not fit on you.

Dogoon - what do you use the knives for? So far military use of knives seems to be tasks including:
-opening rations
-light prying
-occasional use in opening doors, windows etc
-for recreational throwing, whittling etc.
- opening boxes
-cutting soft line

Im curious what you can add to the list :)

Esee 4 also makes for a great camp knife and that linen micarta is sweet to hold.
Only thing I didn't particularly like was trying to strike fire steel with that coated
spine.

The ESEE 4 is a great knife. The 5 is too but it's a bit to heavy.

The 4 is a great compromise size wise. Not too big but not too small.

I loved my #4 but had to buy the handle extensions (ugly polymer) in order to get a good grip on it.

If there was ever a bbq, the ESEE 4 is the best burger flipper :D

Things I used it for included:
-clearing brush from my sleeping area
-cutting myself free from aggressive thorn bushes
-cut down a small tree and other bushes to camo my trench
-used to sharpen sticks to mark cardinal points for a patrol base
-rations of course and to cut bread to make yourself a sandwich

It excelled at collecting vegetation to camo the trench. It's just the right size to properly handle in a hurry and excel at the task you're applying it to.

Ever been in the army? Having the s**tload of gear on you really discorages you to carry anything bulky or heavy if not necessary. Also, I never had to open doors or rations with my knife, we had field cooks and axes. Also, I prefer the knife to cut things where ESEE 5 is not very good at (I've had 5 and have 4). Just my friendly view on the matter.

Field cooks? That's one hell of a luxury that I can wish I was provided. I can't imagine the field cooks following you on a fighting patrol though. What did you do in the army?

I had to sell mine because of this. I couldn't get used to the handle. It's weird as the izula 2 fits me perfectly. ESEE does make some good steel though. I carry my izzy 2 camping and it chews through wood for my kindling.
