Esee 4 liner question

Hi All,

First post here but I've been lurking for a while. I recently decided to take the plunge and pick myself up a Esee 4 uncoated as I wanted to do a forced patina. The patina came out great but I noticed a something in the prep that has me puzzled. From what I can tell from pictures it looks like the Esee 4 came with a green liner under the micarta handles in the beginning. Well much to my surprise my particular knife came with out any liners at all under the handles. I contacted Mike at Esee yesterday via an email an figured it would be at the very least a few days before anyone got back to me. I was shocked when he responded to my email same day, much less a Sunday. How's that for customer service! He told me the green liner is old stock and they haven't used it in years. I thanked him for his time and didn't think anymore about it until this morning when I saw that the Esee 4 is now using a reddish color liner between the micarta handle and the steel (tang). Well my particular knife does not have either liner, in fact there is no liner at all. Why? Was this a mistake, did they just stop using the liner or something of that nature. I love the knife and can't put it down, not to mention the patina came out great! Sorry to beat a dead horse here guys but when I've searched online I can't find a definitive answer as to why my knife has no liner but others that have been recently purchased do. I don't want to email Mike back and bother him with the same question we went over before, but I think he may have assumed I have the red liner and was asking about not having the green liner. While the fact of the matter is I have no liner. Hopefully somebody here has an answer as to what's going on. Thanks for any replies guys I look forward to contributing what I can to this forum.

I dont know but now I'm curious. The 4 I had and the 6 I currently have both came with red liners. I think it would be fine to email them back with your follow up question.

Thanks for the reply, I've emailed them back and currently awaiting a response. I'll post any response here when I get one.

While you wait, any chance you could post a pic of your Esee?

I'd love to see that patina.

Here you go, I soaked the knife in white distilled vinegar for 3 hours. I wiped everything down with rubbing alcohol before to try and get the most uniformed patina possible. I don't know how much protection this will apply to the knife. I hope it's sufficient as I plan on using this a lot.

I like it. Thanks for taking a minute to throw those pics up.

Patinas help against corrosion, so you're on the right track.

Those scales look like the canvas micarta and they don't have the liner like the linen micarta does.

This is true. I used to have one of the desert tan ESEE-4 models with canvas scales and it did not come with any liners.

I recently bought an Esse 3 with canvas micarta scales that appears to be identical to yours: no liner.

So the canvas micarta doesn't come with the liners but the linen does? Is there a reason for this? Also what's the difference in canvas micarta and linen. Is one better than the other? Sorry for my ignorance, thanks for the help!

Canvas is a little grippier, but thats about the only difference. As far as performance they are the same as far as Ive experienced.

I definitely prefer the feel (and look) of the canvas over the linen liners.
The linen feel so much smoother than the canvas to me.

My 4 has canvas and no liners. I also prefer canvas over linen micarta for the grip they offer.
