I have been wanting to do this for some time and I finally have a few hours to get it done.

See any changes?

You can't see it on the picture so well, but I rounded the spine. Sorry, it was on my iPhone.

Here is a closeup of the handle.

Here are a couple more shots.

Sure feels better in my hands. I wish ESEE handles were more ergonomic, but I guess if they weren't then I would not have made the new handles slabs!

Enjoy!

P.S. Sorry for just links. I refuse to resize the photos just to post. If it was not for the lameness of BBCode, I might have had them inline!

Dude it looks awesome! I could tell that something was different with the spine from the first photo. You gotta mustard patina that baby. Very nice!

Thanks, guys!

I love doing the work. Took me a couple of hours. I do have plans on putting a patina on it and making a leather sheath. I am also reworking a Cold Steel Trail Hawk to go with it. I will put an osage orange handle on it and give it a patina too. Now the question is: What is the best way to patina steel? I want something that does not cut deeply but puts a nice finish. Is mustard the way to go?

Ive not done it to mine yet but I want to. Ive seen guys get really good results with a very thin layer of mustard. From what I understand you dont want too much on there, you need a good amount of air contacting the steel in order to create the layer of oxidation (patina).

Your ESEE 4 looks great!

Kind of like my 'un-tac'd' Tac-Ops 4 from BlackJack knives;

I really like the slightly more classy combination of cocobolo and leather sheath but don't get me wrong my Tac Ops 4 was terrific in standard format as I'm sure your ESEE 4 was...

Cheers!

Here is the final result. First, I stripped the blade and added a patina as I said I would. Finally, I molded a leather sheath for it.

BTW, I used FeCl for the patina. After looking into the mustard patina, I wanted the finish to be more uniform and smoother.

Sorry for such crappy pictures. If I can, I will grab the camera tomorrow and post something that's a bit more complementary of all the effort I put into this project.
