im wanting to buy an esee 4 plain edge knife. i like the green one with orange g10 handle the best, but i also like the tan one with textured micarta handle. my big dilema is that i have never felt g10 handles or micarta. im wondering which one feels better on the hands. if i could get a green one with the micarta handles id probly bite on that.

thanks in advance
matt

they are both comfortable to use, the canvas micarta is a bit more grippy for me. You could always get the green with orange and order a set of canvas scales from esee they arn't very expensive. Oh and welcome to the forum.

take it easy

mr cricket is right on the grippyness of the canvas micarta... it's phenominal in the wet compared to g10 in my opinion. and welcome as well

Well there is not denying that the g-10 isnt as grippy as micarta however it boasts a host of advantages.

Its tougher against impacts and weather and solvents.

It doesnt absorbs liquids the way micarta does.

its easier to keep clean (although micarta is fairly easy to wash as well just take some soap and a scrub brush to it and let it dry) just rinse and let sit

And last but not least for an outdoors knife its safety orange making losing it much more difficult.

ESEE makes some darn great knives so you really cant go wrong but if the orange g10 tickles your fany then go for it, youd be one of numerous members here who likes orange handled knives.

I don't find much difference between the canvas and linen micarta , but the G10 is probably more smooth. You could sand the scales a bit to improve grip if you want the orange. Both materials are extremely tough and resistant to chemicals and such.

My personal favorite is the plain canvas black one. Great knife that always heads to the trail with me.

Welcome to BF !

I have a black/canvas one and its a great knife. I opted to get the version with the molle back. I've used it hunting, fishing, and camping and it works well for just about anything. I've also got an Izula with the g10 handle scales from TKC and honestly out of the two I dont have much of a preference. The micarta do seem to lock in the hand a bit better but as far as use and function I havent had any problems with either. If you are concerned about slipping, the micarta would be a better choice. That being said, I've cleaned fish with the Izula g10 and have had no issues.

Along with everyone else, welcome!

I love my OD/orange G10 ESEE-4. As Cricket said, you can always buy the canvas micarta from ESEE if you don't like the G10.
