I have been lurking here for a while. I decided it was time to introduce myself and what a better way than showing off my new sheath. I have recently started making my own sheaths. This is the fourth sheath I have done. It is for my ESEE 4, which I think is one of the best knives I have purchased. Let me know what you think. The only way I am going to learn is to hear what and how I could have done it better.

As you can see from this picture I used snaps to make it easy on and off the belt. Love this feature on a couple of holsters I have.

I echo what shandrydan1 says......excellent work. I really like the contour of the blade you have there, very neat and clean.

Thank you for that. I have seen some of your work on your web site. Absolutely outstanding. If you have any tips or comments please share them with me.

It doesn't look like you need any help from me, but I do have a question...how many stitches per inch you doing? 6 spi looks best (imo) for three layers......or maybe you're pulling on them a little too tight.....could be my eyes too....Dr. my eyes........

I am using a 3/32 3 prong lacing chisel to punch my holes. So it is running 7 stitches per inch. You might also be right about pulling tight. I do tend to pull pretty tight as I am stitching the sheath together. So how snug do you normally make stitches?

Looks fantastic my friend....keep up the good work! I also like the button detach on the belt loop, a rather neat idea I may have to borrow some time.

I, too, have a habit of really cinching down on my stitches. I use a double needle saddle stitch. I just do it subconsciously to ensure I have a strong stitch.

Btw, what color did you use for the dye and how did you finish the sheath out?

Thanks for the good words. I used Fiebing's Mahogany oil dye, neatsfoot oil and a couple of coats of carnuba cream.

Ah yes, looked like mahogany to me but I thought I'd ask. Seems like every time I try to guess at a dye color, I'm usually WAY off lol.

Anyway, looks great! Might I offer a bit of advice? And if you've done this, disregard...it's hard to tell from the pictures.

Take your tool you used for burnishing and burnish the inside of the belt loop. Mat those fibers down good and slick, gum tragacanth works great for this. This little detail will help make your sheaths look just a bit better and can aid in putting the knife on and taking off.

Thanks I will take my burnishing tool to the belt loop and see how it works. All advise is greatly appreciated. Any suggestions on finishes?

For a good user knife like that, look into something like Montana Pitch Blend or Sno-Seal. Both come highly recommended.

I don't believe it's necessary to crank on the thread as you're pulling it through the holes....pull firmly, but just enough to make the stitch lay flat against the surface. It will make for a cleaner, more uniform looking stitch, imo.

Ray, wouldn't less SPI allow for more leather between stitches and help prevent locking them down too tight?

Thanks for the tip. I will try being a little less aggressive with those stitches

I'm no expert, but that thing looks great to me. I love the snaps on the belt loop. I love seeing those more experienced at sheath making so willing to give advice to a newby. I'm finding more things I like about this forum every time I get on!

I am very happy with the snaps. I am getting ready to start another sheath for a Mora of mine. I will be adding the snaps to that one also. It is great that people here are willing to help one another.
