ESEE 5 for urban bugout situation?

alright guys and girls i've decided that the HEST is going to be my first purchase. however, i do realize that it would serve me well to buy a larger blade not just for camping (which i don't do often enough) but for use in the big city should a natural disaster occur.

i read up a little on the 5's on this forum and how they're geared more towards downed pilots and the like.

due to my work and family situation, i commute 20+ miles a day through a densely populated area. i plan to use the HEST as a car kit with ESEE's pouch, seeing as my county outlaws personal carry of larger fixed blade knives in any fashion.

for an urban setting, would you more experienced folks recommend me to go with the 4, 5, or 6? since the 5 is geared toward pilots, i figured the glass breaker on the pommel and stoutness would help in the big city, while still being big enough for me to baton wood for fires should the normal sources for heat and light be unavailable. i won't lie, i want them all, but now i'm going for necessity over wants in terms of my emergency kits.

any help swaying me towards the 5 or the other knives would be greatly appreciated. thanks all!

I think the 5 would probably be a good choice for an urban knife. Be able to stand up to more prying and abuse that you may come in to in an emergency situation.

Yes ,
The 5 would work good as an Urban knife...if you had to pry open a window or door...and the pommel would work good at breaking glass in a vehicle or building if needed ...Stout & Solid

I agree with Adam and Tony. The 5 would be a beast to EDC, but in a bug-out backpack in a survival situation it would be worth the weight and size.

Nice choice!

ESEE-5 for ANY bugout situation-that's what this knife was built for, simply put, every survival task. It doesn't fall short, period-there really shouldn't be any question about its' viability as a survival knife after you handle one in person.

I just ordered a 5.:D

It's gonna be my " I absolutely have to wack my way through this " knife.

In reality , when I'm going to carry my 5 , I'll usually back it up with a thin slicer like the Izula or the 3.

It's a serious , no nonsense , no-fail , survival machine. It will be by my side if and when SHTF. ( and on camping trips ;) )

Yep - that's what my 5 is for... if the SHTF - I currently EDC an Izula, but leaning towards bringing a HEST home for a new EDC ("Honey, it FOLLOWED me home, can we keep it?")

hmm, back in the day i remember seeing people carry larger fixed blades on occasion. that was in Santa Clars county and we;; over 20 years ago tho.

i don't paay too much attention to some of Kali's silly laws since i left.

but let me suggest something that might pass casual scrutiny and that's not only VERY affordable, buy VERY beefy for prying and hacking type jobs, that would be one of the EOD Breacher Bars from countycomm.com they now have a new smaller version. either one is under $15.

now, they need some work to put an edge on them, and they don't come with any kind of handle or sheath... but wrapping the grip area with 550 seems popular and it's very simple to do. for a sheath you could make something from kydex or nylon webbing.

it's definitely a "sharpened prybar" and doesn't have a keen knife edge,,, but spend some time with it in a stone and it will serve to do some damage. as long as you have a giid sharp knife it could work for the rougher jobs. but it just ain't very sexy.

ESEE 5 would be good, are you planning on IWB carrying it? hah just kidding of course, what kind of rig?

fixer-

already got my breacher bar in my get home bag :D right now i'm working with a sog trident and breacher bar, but i know i have to have a stout fixed blade to keep in the trunk. hence my choice for the HEST. i'd likely be keeping the 5 in my home for work around the house and possibly around the neighborhood given the situation at hand.

birdkiller-

i don't own any rigs, just bags, so i doubt the 5 would go anywhere other than a kit by itself, or strapped onto one of my packs. i am working on an ats warbelt setup after i make these knife purchases, but that would be for more of an apocalyptic scenario, as i don't want to be target practice for LEO during any other emergency situation. definitely planning on having another HEST on the rig when it's completed though.

I'd say it's a good purchase. Besides after the nuclear war you'll need sth to fend off those giant roaches.

But in all seriousness, if sth can't handle EVERY DAMN THING you throw at it, it's the 5.

I actually have the breacher bar from countycomm, but the only thing I've done to it is wrap the handle with paracord.. what's the easiest way to sharpen without damaging the temper?
