Hey guys, someone recommended an esee 5 knife for me to take when i get deployed. Does anyone here in BF own an esee 5. On the other hand some people say its too thick and heavy to be a fighting knife. I imagine being a whopping 1/4 thick it will take some much needed force to thrust and pierce clothing, body armor, and flesh. If anyone can give me some much needed advice i would very much appreciate it. Semper Fi OOOOORAH!

Lots of guys own a 5 and its a stellar woods knife. But for urban combat deployment and a fighting knife I'd recommend something longer and thinner. The esee 5 is designed to be a downed pilots survival knife in a jungle or wooded environment. one knife that can do everything but nothing really well. Jack of all trades, master of none. For a fighter in the esee line I'd say the esee 6. From other brands I'd recommend the bk7, scrapyard 711 or yard guard, there are lots from the busse combat line as well. Also the Kabar USMC knife is a favorite.

WOW! Thats sick! But i think im going to be packing at least 50 pounds with my rifle, ammo, LBE. But dang thats a sick, beautiful looking knife.

ESEE 5 weights a pound! There's so many lighter knives that will do the job you need it to do. Stash an ESEE5 in a plane, crash and it's easy to carry when you don't have a pack.

You really should check out some of the threads here that talk about combat soldiers and knives... the general consensus us that knife fighting is very rare and what most soldiers actually use their knives for is utility stuff. Lots of commentary as well on the fact that you'll be dealing with so much heavy gear that a big knife isn't useful weight. So maybe consider a sturdy (and light) folder. KA-BAR mule, or lots of people think the Cold Steel American Lawman and AK47 folders are strong.

It's a brick, no doubt about it. That said I've packed it up maybe 20 10,000+ footers and I've been glad to have it every time. It takes some muscle to use but it'll handle anything. Probably not the best fighting knife in the world, but definitely among the best Combat Survival knives.

I'd have to say good weight. Just because, if SHTF i would want to get stabbed with a thin knife that weighs 4oz then get stabbed with a knife that is super wide&thick and that weighs 1 pound. ya know what i mean? If you're a grown man 16oz should be featherweight!

It depends on if you think the incredibly slim chance that you somehow get in a knife fight with a bad guy or end up in a survival scenario stranded deep behind enemy lines in a hardwood forest (Wisconsin?) while serving makes it worth lugging that thing around.

99.999999% of the tasks your will probably perform will be taken care by a multitool and without all that weight.

Multitools aren't all that light either plus chances are everyone else in the unit is packing one.

Have you considered an ESEE 6? I've really been looking at them lately since a couples guys I know swear by them. But I don't know how it compares, weight-wise, to the 5.

From an old Jar Head look at a Blackjack Halo 14. It is almost a 1/4 inch thick and it is directly modeled after the Randall model 14.It is made of A2 steel and has a 7 1/2 inch blade. If I was still in and going into any of the war zones that would be what I was packing if I did not have all the custom knives I have now to choose from. Lots of guy's are saying all they have used are multi tools and a folder. That is fine but I am from the mind set of I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

Semper Fi brother!

It could be used as a fighting knife. There is a sharp tip on the ESEE-5.But the thickness of the blade and the lack of a swedge/false edge or double edge doesn't make it the "best" fighter/killer.But it will kill if needed.I have no doubt.

I still think the ESEE-6 would be a better choice for you,in my opinion....

And particularly the ESEE-6 with sharpened clip point.
As an all around knife it functions better(much better slicer). And as a killing tool it will function MUCH better...

The ESEE-3 is a very fine knife also.
And for utility ,daily tasks it's much less cumbersome.
Maybe even an Izula II...
Little knives but wicked sharp...And very tough.

Take care...

The ESEE 6 clip point is such a badass knife!:D

It definitely is .

The regular ESEE-6 can be used as a killer too.
I have seen pics where it was used for the killing of a hog.

If it is good for hogs ,then it will be effective on humans too I will assume.

But the clip point version makes the 'entrance'..the penetration much easier.

There is a reason fighting knives have a sharpened clip .

Anyhow.
I think that what others already said, chances of getting into a 1 on 1 close combat is VERY small(but is there).
And if you are a soldier,I would take more effort in finding the best gun/pistol to carry. And to carry it in a way so you can draw it real fast.

If he just graduated boot camp from the USMC im pretty sure hes deadly with firearms and when he finishes infantryschool, HOLY CRAP! but i guess he just didnt get much training on knives. Thats whats so cool about bladeforum we get to share our knowledge and wisdom. AND YES if it could kill a hog, hell yeah it can kill me LOL:mad:

I doubt you'll really want to carry an extra lb. An ESEE-3 or 4 is more than enough knife for most tasks. Usually in these threads people say get a multitool, reliable folder, or a small fixed blade.

Uhh kill you?
Yeah well any human I guess...:o
Did read an account about a big fat dude being stabbed by his brother with 8 inch blade knife in the belly, and no vitals were cut.
He got sewed up and left with that same brother from the hospital.

So the neck would be a preferred target against large dudes if going for the kill..
(I'm not into killing people.Just in case someone is in the situation of having no other way than to use the knife to protect oneself..)

The ESEE-5 is definitely a heavy knife.
And having it on the hip it will make you feel it is 'there'.
And with a 3 ,or 4 ,this won't be the case at all.

I like the handle blade ratio of the 3 better though.
Small lightweight knife but cuts all you need.
Sometimes less is more.
